Anonymous Forum contributions on your wiki
Hey Flaicher,
I have a question to ask you and the other admins of this wiki, if you're willing to share your thoughts. As you're probably aware, Fandom is preparing to move all wikis onto a new community platform and part of that process is the upcoming migration of your forums to Discussions.
Now, it's not quite time for that yet. We'll share more information and there will be some improvements to Discussions before anything gets migrated.
However, your community's forums stand out among the 2,000 or so remaining forum communities because it has an uncommonly high percentage of people who post anonymously. Why do you think that is? Do you feel like the posts you receive from anonymous users are generally just as productive and welcome as the ones from logged-in users?
Discussions does not currently allow anonymous users to post. That means, once your forums have been migrated to Discussions, the users who don't have accounts would either have to log in or could no longer post. Do you think the community could lose valuable people and conversations due to this?
User:Hennils 6/12/2020
From the "forums" themselves? I don't think so.
On article's comment sections more so though. Users that don't edit commonly 1.) point out mistakes or new changes that need to be reflected on a page or 2.) ask questions regarding missing information. This is done regularly by both users with and without account without any noticeable difference in quality. This takes place mostly by nature of the wiki being practically necessary to understanding large parts of the game's mechanics, which are ever changing.
Message Walls are already pretty useless for anonymous users, since their messages do not generate notifications over there. So this won't change much.
User:Mira Laime 6/12/2020
So you'd say Discussions not allowing anonymous posts isn't a big problem for your community?
For article comments I have good news: They're already live on the UCP and do allow for anonymous posts. So no change there.
Message Walls don't allow anonymous messages on the UCP yet, but will likely allow it later - mainly for cases where a user is blocked, feels the block is unfair and needs a way to reach out to the admin without violating more rules by creating a new account.

Most of the boards in the forum are non-essential to the Wiki. The only two that are important and see a lot of productive use from anons are the Q&A and Wiki Discussion boards. However, both of those can easily be emulated by comment sections (and /d/ for the registered), so losing them won't be a problem.
Unfortunately, we will be losing our Clan Recruitment and Feedback and Ideas boards which do receive a decent amount of traffic. The F&I board is a fun place for both registered users and anons to interact and share opinions, though Digital Extremes doesn't visit there. And the Clan Recruitment board has become a pretty big way for clans to find new members, so they might be impacted the most by the changes.
I'm sure a work-around for both cases, and other boards like General Discussion, can be made, though suggestions on how to do so would help.
Also, you mentioned anons would not be able to post messages on walls initially. Why is that? Is it a purposeful decision, or just a result of the migration process. And why don't anons create notifications currently?
User:Mira Laime 6/12/2020
Can you explain what you mean by losing these two boards? When your forums are migrated to Discussions, all boards with all their existing threads will move to Discussions, so you shouldn't lose them. You just lose the ability to post in them anonymously.
Message Walls are based on the same technology as Discussions on the UCP, so the code does not out of the box support anonymous posting. It's something we have to deliberately add back in, and that has just not happened yet.
Are you asking why anonymous users don't get message wall notifications or why their messages don't generate notifications for those whose walls they post on?
User:FINNER 6/12/2020
Maybe lost was the wrong wording. I'm worried they will become too inactive without anons, especially the recruitment board. Again, they aren't Wiki essential though.
Also, is this migration going to actually migrate the boards (past forum posts and all) to Discussions, or just create a new blank forum? That's probably answered in the blog posts, but I haven't had a chance to read them yet, sorry.
User:Mira Laime 6/12/2020
This upcoming forum migration will maintain all content and move it over to Discussions. Boards will become categories and be added to any categories that may already exist in Discussions.
There are a lot more details on how the migration works here on Community Central!
