Characteristics

This weapon deals primarily damage.

Advantages:

• High base damage.
  • High damage – effective against Infested, Flesh and Cloned Flesh.
• Long range attacks with a wide radius.
  • Normal attacks can hit most flying enemies without jumping.
• Large slam attack AoE that knocks down enemies, with a chance of inflicting a Blast proc.
  • This allows it to knock down even more enemies, past its normal slam radius if a nearby enemy is affected.
• High status chance.
• Has a polarity.
• Stance slot has a polarity, matching Shimmering Blight stance.

Disadvantages:

• Low and damage – less effective against Shields and Armor.

Notes

• Even though the weapon requires Oxium, the Tonbo is one of the most inexpensive weapon blueprints to make that is only available through Clan research as it does not require any Forma or Argon Crystals. The only other weapons with that distinction are the Serro, Anku, and Nami Skyla, as while the Amprex also does not require Forma, it does require three Argon Crystals.
• Another exclusive, shared distinction between the Tonbo and Serro is that they are the only polearms with an innate polarity.
• The ground slam has a chance to inflict a proc.
  • There seems to be a maximum distance that the blast proc can actually proc. [Testing required.]
• It can effectively hit enemies without physically touching them with a maxed out Reach

Trivia

• "Tonbo" (蜻蛉) is Japanese for "dragonfly".
  • The weapon's name is likely derived from the Tonbogiri (蜻蛉切), a spear also known as the "Dragonfly Cutting Spear". The spear derives its moniker from the myth that a dragonfly landed on its blade and was instantly cut in two. The Tonbogiri was one of three legendary Japanese spears created by the famed swordsmith Masazane Fujiwara, said to be wielded by Honda Tadakatsu.
• The blade itself resembles those found on Bill polearms, though with significantly larger proportions.
• At its initial release this weapon could not be researched in the Clan Dojo, this was fixed in Hotfix 15.15.0.1 (2015-02-18).
• Listed as FlowerPowerPolearm in the game files.
