This is all original calculations. I spent HOURS on it. Please either link people to this discussion, give me credit, or at the very least explain you weren't the one who did the math, if you use any of this information. Note: This is completely based off the wiki information at time of writing, version 15.6.1 (PC) 3/9/2015. PC and other versions should have = mod data. In-game values for Metal Auger's punch-through are listed as rounded to the 1st decimal, not the exact.

First, Basic info:

• Metal Auger (MA) and Shred are Rare Rifle mods for increasing (primarily) punch-through. MA gives only punch through, while Shred provides both punch through and fire rate, however Shred is a Nightmare Mod and untransmutable, and will likely prove harder to obtain.

Stats & info:

• MA- (R)Rank 0/1/2/3/4/5; (P)punch-through 0.35/0.70/1.05/1.40/1.75/2.10; (C)cost 10/11/12/13/14/15
• Formulas: P/C=E(Efficiency) C=10+R
• S.-- (R)Rank 0/1/2/3/4/5; (P)punch-through 0.20/0.40/0.60/0.80/1.00/1.20; (C)cost 6/7/8/9/10/11; (F)fire-rate 5/10/15/20/25/30
• Formulas: P/C=E(Efficiency) C=6+R F=5x(1+R)

Comparison & calculations:

• Rank 0 MA costs 10 and provides 0.35(P) while 0.4(P) costs 7 at Rank 1 S & Rank 2 MA costs 12 and provides 1.05(P) while 1.2(P) costs 11 at Rank 5 S; but each Rank of MA gives .35 (P) while S gives .2 (P); which means MA (P) is more efficient at each rank when compared 1:1 with equal rank S (P). However, a higher ranked S of same (P) as lower ranked MA is more efficient even at maxed rank S.
• MA's (E)=0.035/0.063/.0875/0.107/0.125/0.140
• S's (E).-=0.033/0.057/0.075/.0888/0.100/0.109

Summary:

• Use S at rank 2 or 5 for a similar (P) as rank 0 or 2 MA, but with MA starting more efficiently and having a better efficiency increase rate, a rank 5 S is less efficient then a mere rank 4 MA- just make sure you can spare the extra 3 points.
• Because rank 5 S has a bonus of 30% fire rate (which is equal to 6(C) Speed Trigger), MA is only effective without consideration of F, or if fire rate is not valuable.

Afterword (more math) & Combining MA + Speed Trig:

• Through a series of calculations, including comparing (P) and (F) efficiency, (which is done by giving S post-5 rank values) a rank 5 Speed Trigger + rank 5 MA is NOT more (C) efficient then a rank-5 Shred, despite both being individually more efficient when compared to Shred's individual stats.
• If S's (P) had to = Rank 5 MA's (P) of 2.1, it would require 4.5 extra ranks and would (C) 15.5 and have 57.5 (F) just under the (F) of max rank Speed Trigger and just over the (C) of MA.

Simple and practical conclusions:

• Use any rank of Shred if you can't afford, or don't care for more punch-through.
• Use high-rank Shred instead of lower ranked Metal Auger
• NEVER combine Metal Auger and Speed Trigger unless you want to use TONS of capacity.
• Well done.

@OP, good calculations. common sense provides the same results though.

• I say, why not both. Shit tons of fun. Shooting ogris through walls and stuff. Quanta cubes that don't bounce. I had some fun. Would only really use that combination on a burst weapon so you don't waste bullets. + added FR is nice on Burston.Â

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing

I figured what i was doing would be a simple asumtion by most people, anyways, but it's good to have facts (or at least research that seems factual to me) to back up the theorys and asumtions.

From the bottom text:*Use high-rank Shred instead of lower ranked Metal Auger

• NEVER combine Metal Auger and Speed Trigger unless you want to use TONS of capacity.

Did I need to mention not using both PT mods? O.o These two bullets sum up alot, but i supose that idea was never addressed... Admittedly of opinion mainly, adding more punch-through wouldn't be a statistical waste, considering it can't be added elsewhere... but I'm not sure how practical that much punch through is. Bows already have a niche for it, and with added fire rate, if not for bows, then what use?

• I hope you could take it from my writng style that it isn't meant as a serious option. Just that it is an option. And the added FR I meant coming from Metal Auger. It is fun though, having Shred and Metal Auger. It's not very effecient or handy, but I never said that it would be. I mainly used it during Def missions, shooting a single burst and seeing all those hits pop up. It's just fun and can be handy although it's mainly meant for FUN

• You spend HOURS on that ? :D

But what you wrote is visible on first sight lol

maggot funcher

• The only reason why people use Shred over Metal is the fact it gives Fire Rate and just enough Punch through to fire through enemies so you can kill huge groups more effieciently is all lol.

• This is what I gathered from taking a look at this post:

• OP thinks in capacity efficiency, not slot efficiency.
• OP considers lower rank versions of both mods, even when they have no benefit over a maxed version, aka being worse.
• OP wants to compare both mods. However, this never goes beyond "both have punch-through" and "Shred also has Fire Rate"

But hey, if you like wasting your time some more --> do common physical damage mods vs rare event physical mods vs damaged versions next!
