As a new user of Limbo, I really didn't think I'd like him or the Rift mechanic, but he's actually very nice to play as. He can also do lots of healing and restore tons of energy with the proper mods, as well as tank a literal infinite amount of damage by Rift Walking and just being there.
The only real downsides to Limbo are Bombard rockets being unaffected by the Rift, how situational he is, and the fact that most pubs have no idea how the Rift works. As such, unenlightened pubs can't use the Rift/being Banished to it's full ability; they tend to instead yell at any Limbo that might try to Banish them, even if they're dying/need energy/need to hack something/etc., which is completely stupid as you can just roll to get out of Banish now... Being called a "bad Limbo" for doing what Limbo was made to do (and doing it effectively and in the least annoying way possible) is a real downer, before realizing that no one really knows what a "good Limbo" even is.
Because Cataclysm is now togglable, that makes Limbo significantly less annoying for everyone involved, especially when important items get veiled by the Rift. It also allows Limbo some rather effective AoE CC by simply spamming Cataclysm a few times in quick succession.
Ultimately, Limbo is a great support and solo choice, providing:
- Massive single-target damage (Banish + Rift Surge + Rift Walk)
- Near-complete invulnerability from any enemy; like Disarm but better
- Protection from most damage, including not just enemies, but most traps
- Great energy regen, stacks with Energy Siphon
- Healing potential with proper modding, though obviously not as good as Trinity or Oberon fully modded
As stated before, Limbo does have some downsides, including:
- Some objects/enemies are not affected by the rift, including Bombard rockets
- Enemy auras can affect players on either side of the plane
- Status effects do not cancel when entering the Rift, and can still proc while one is in the Rift
- The Rift mechanic can be confusing upon first interaction, and even after many will still not know how it works without direct explanations
- While many aspects of the game are tweaked to take the Rift into account, some instances completely ignore it or implement it badly
