  • I just built Vasto, but I'm not very sure if I should swap it for Despair...

    • These are completely different weapons and we can't really compare them.

      In a nut-shell:

Despair will do more damage and have travel time.

Vasto will do less damage (more so on higher level mobs) but have bullet bonuses like faster travel time (almost instant) and hit-scan abilities.

Personally I suggest despair but it doesn't really matter, you need them both at 30 for mastery rank.

    • Try out kunai and that will tell you if you would like despair. I personally LOVED Kunai, and was so happy to get despair to drop. I will also be building an Acrid in the long term as a viable alternative to Despair.

    • I personally chose DESPAIR over the VASTO, as I found the VASTO lacking in some areas. The Despair has a slower throw rate than the normal KUNAI, but negates armor. The VASTO can fire at rapid speeds, and still maintain a large amount of damage, while the LEX outdoes it in damage, it has a much slower fire rate.

I personally can't give you a straight answer, so put some thought into your playstyle first... If you play stealth, DESPAIR would be my reccomendation. But the VASTO does have many uses as well.

    • Despair, hands down. Or better - Twin Gremlins.

Vasto is a t2 of Lex, and it's a very slight upgrade. Yes, it has high damage, but no clip, slow firiting and HUGE, bloody hell HUGE recoil. Even Latron is easier to fire. And with damage type of Bullet - it's so not worth to have Vasto with low clip and high recoil to have that damage.

Despair has some pluses and minuses over Kunai, notably worse damage type, but more damage and some usability bonuses(higher distance or speed, as far as I remember) still put Despair as best thrown secondary. Not the best secondary for sure, but if you are a fan of ninjas - it's your choice.

To answer the question - the only two possible benefits of Vasto are the range and accuracy. However, range is not a problem, if you can manage it, and accuracy is as good as one shot every 2 seconds due to recoil. Depair, on the other hand, just requires you to learn the trajectory of the blade, and you can unload whole clip of 55 damage armor piecing blades in 2-3 seconds. I liked Kunai very much, when got them after Lato, the ease of huge damage umodded for levels 20-30 was glorious. But personally, I wouldn't take throws into endgame. But, if you liked Kunai, or haven't tried them - Despair is just much better than Vasto.

As a recommendation for golden middle between higher clip\automatic shooting and precision - try Twin Gremlins. It is superior than Vasto and Kunai taken together, with high clip, fast shooting, automatic shooting, Physics Impact(one of two best damage types)damage. Only two disadvantages are slightly longer reload and low base damage(and maybe mildly slower bullet flight). But it really will tear apart any enemy without second thought, and easily last you until Mastery 7 and Acrid, if you potato it.

    • There isn't even an argument to be had here. Play the game enough or even read this wiki enough, and Despair is the clear choice. If you are looking for the best sidearm in the game, as of today 8/21/13, its the Acrid. I'll do a simple Tier breakdown:

      Tier 1 (best): Acrid

Tier 2: Despair & Kunai. Despair>Kunai except vs infested

Tier 3: Hikou. Hikou>Despair & Kunai vs LIGHT infested ONLY

Tier 4: Nominations for "Best of the rest": Twin Gremlin, Vasto, Lex, Akbolto

As a mastery rank 11 player I agree with everything he said.

I use Acrid myself but my fall-back is the despair.

    • Twin Gremlins and Akbolto are both with the Hikou in Tier 3 since they all have armor ignore properties.

Tier 4 is everything else without armor ignore.

    • Acrid. >.> Acrid all the way >.>

      Acrid > All.

BTW Hikou is better than Kunai if you've got patience to buy the damn ammo boxes.

    • Unless you plan on playing only level 80+, I'd go for the Vasto. I have both (and am Rank 7 if that matters) and prefer my Vasto. The accuracy/range can be a huge benefit sometimes, and I also like weapons that don't need ammo boxes (high average damage per shot - not per second)...

    • Wtf is with this Tier business? What is this? Void Runs? How can you rate weapons of different playstyles in the same 'tier'. And you're underrating a weapon's worth compared to another? Sure they have the same hitscan style but they obviously play differently with different fire rates, recoil, damage type etc.

I personally have both Despair and Akvastos and recommend that you try both of them. It's very much down to a playstyle thing and if you like it then potato it, forma it, mod it properly and it should be viable against any faction.

Despair plays like a ninja and I usually use them more often because I personally prefer throwing weapons (with all the guns you already have as primary weapons its a good change once in a while). Throwing weapons of course have travel time which is annoying at times but if you can get the hang of it splitting someone in half is surprisingly satisfying :p

Akvastos on the other hand has an obviously more cowboy feel to it which is why I crafted it in the first place XD They feel really cool to use until I got bored with guns but that depends on your preference mostly lol

I disagree completely with you....Playstyle does not determine what weapon I use.

The first thing I look at when choosing a weapon is DPS...the weapon with the highest DPS usually win's me over. HOWEVER...there is one caveat...If the frame has low defense then I may choose a weapon that highest accuracy on long range....For example...The Soma does not have higher DPS than Boltor Prime...but with Soma...I can still head shot at a greater distance even with Maxed Heavy Cal....so I find myself using Soma with frames like Nyx, Necros, and Nova...but Boltor Prime with frames like Saryn, Trinity and Rhino.

Same with Secondary...I like the Brakk with frames that have good defense...and I use Despair with frames that have low defense...If Akvastos had the 100% accuacy that the Despair has...I would make that switch. One other thing...slash is too high for my liking on Akvasto...I prefer puncture as I play mostly against Grineer...or Void which puncture owns Heavy Gunners in void.

BTW..the reason I chose weapons by DPS...is because I prefer to play Survivals..and I don't play Survivals for the 20 30 or 40 min mark...I play until the life support is gone..which usually for me and the people I play with is on the other side of the 60 min mark.

Once again none of this is based on playstyle...but which gives me the greatest success at high level game play for the the types of Faction I am facing.
