An instructive storybook by Euleria Entrati.
—Decoration description

The Tales of Duviri is a storybook that was written and created by Euleria Entrati.

Lore & History[]

General[]

Euleria Entrati of the EntratiIcon Entrati, inspired by the bedroom stories her father Albrecht Entrati told her long ago, created the Tales of Duviri which is a collection of stories that tell of the Kingdom of Duviri. It recounts details of the hamlets that dot its surface, as well as the ruler Dominus Thrax, and his five royal courtiers: happy Mathila, angry Lodun, jealous Bombastine, sad Luscinia, and fearful Sythel.

To that end, there are various memorabilia associated with it all across the Zariman Ten Zero. Some items include the Kaithe pictures sold by Hombask, and the Dominus Thrax figurine that was owned by the Drifter as a child.

The Zariman 10-0[]

The storybook was presumably written before the maiden voyage of the Zariman. Appearing to be just an ordinary children's storybook, Tales Of Duviri was instead used as a tool to teach the young passengers of the Zariman how to regulate and control their emotions when traveling through the Void[1][2].

Due to the unexpected events emotions cause when coming into contact with Void energy[3], emotional regulation and control was considered to be a crucial skill to have when traveling through the Void. Excess exposure is known to cause psychological distress[4], to the point that the Zariman's inhabitants were advised to request a Zariman Cephalon to seal off their environs should they be exposed to it[5].

Creation of Duviri[]

Main article: The Duviri Paradox

When the Zariman was lost in the Void, most of the adults were driven mad by its influence and started killing everything in sight. A powerful entity native to the Void known as the Man in the Wall appeared before the protagonist child inside one of the ship's classrooms, besieged by the maddened colonists. The entity made the offer to save the children inside the ship, but would only do if it considered the desire of salvation genuine enough.

In the main reality, when the protagonist child accepted the offer, the Zariman children were given Void powers and became the Tenno, an empowered enclave of children capable fending themselves off from the maddened colonists. The protagonist child would soon become what became colloquially known as an Operator, one of many that would make up the warrior caste.

However, there exists an alternate reality where the protagonist child accepted the entity's offer to save "all of them", but deliberately excluded only the child from being saved in the process. The exact process of the saving of the other children is left unknown, but the child would be left alone in the Zariman ship adrift in the Void, with no Tenno power inherited from the deal. The adrift child in the ship would soon resort to the Tales of Duviri as a coping mechanism, their emotions and memories reacting with the Void, bringing the Kingdom of Duviri to life via Conceptual Embodiment as an archipelago floating close to the Zariman. That version of the child became the Drifter, and was trapped in Duviri for a long time.

Chapters[]

Each chapter focuses on one of the royal courtiers of Dominus Thrax.

The Harbinger of Joy[]

Mathila, The Harbinger of Joy

To the Happy mind, all things seem simple. Problems could be solved simply by making them go away.
—Euleria Entrati

Mathila sought to fill Duviri with Joy, believing that she knew what would make people happy better than they did. She believed that bringing Happiness was simple; just make any problem go away. However, this was merely a facade. But Mathila attempted to hide from the truth, as nothing but Joy mattered to her.

She did not understand why others were so difficult, and why they couldn't be just as Happy as she was. She didn't understand that Happiness does not come by making unhappiness a crime.

Mathila's doubts were well hidden. Her plans were failing, yet it made her all the more determined to succeed. With a whistle, Mathila put on a brave face and got back to work. She embraced optimism with fanatic-like zeal; Mathila's plan would work. The people of Duviri would be Happy.

However, there was no logic or reason to her actions. No sane person could look at what Mathila had done, and feel Happy. So, Mathila abandoned reason, and jumped from being Happy, to going mad.

The Prince of Fire[]

Lodun crown

Lodun, The Prince of Fire

Hear now of the one they called Lodun – the high and the mighty prince of…nothing. For within him burned a fire and a fury he could not control.
—Euleria Entrati

Lodun of Duviri was nicknamed 'The Prince of Fire', which was a mocking title, for he ruled over nothing, least of all himself. He had a burning fury that he couldn't even control. The smallest of things could spark his Anger, and as his fire rose so too did his indignation.

Everything and everyone, friend and foe alike, were met with Lodun's Anger. He drove people away with his Anger, and it became a weight in his chest until it made him an enemy to even himself. He eventually realized that the source of his anger was his own shortcomings and powerlessness. But he was unable to contain his own fire, so he was consumed by it.

The Covetous Courtier[]

Bombastine, The Covetous Courtier

Bombastine was envious. Of what? Anything. Wherever his gaze fell, it seemed other people had it better.
—Euleria Entrati

Bombastine was envious of anything and everyone. It seemed other people had it better wherever he looked. Although he was Duviri's "preening peacock", and the subject of Envy by many, he never felt that it was enough and did not care for it.

Many loved Bombastine, but others were loved more and that was poison to him. Even when he persuaded others with his sweet words, he only ever thought how his performance could benefit him. Each new conquest was a chance to stop, but he kept indulging in a new fixation like a child instead, until he eventually set his heart on the throne.

Bombastine did not realize that many people suffered from self-doubt, thinking it was his alone. The Envy he could've used as motivation to better himself, but his inability to love himself instead made him hurl into disaster.

The Sorrowful Soprano[]

Luscinia water

Luscinia, The Sorrowful Soprano

Sorrow is the bitter spice without which life is too sweet. Luscinia indulged in it...to excess.
—Euleria Entrati

Luscinia indulged in Sorrow to excess. It was a poison that Luscinia drank like wine. She wondered if inflicting suffering upon those who deserved it would end her misery, but she eventually realized that though it relieved her at first, it was a cold comfort and her Sorrow grew.

Sorrow made Luscinia compassionate, and she could not give pain without feeling it, so she wept for those she was hurting. She tried to dismiss this thought as a weakness, but her heart disagreed. Luscinia eventually decided to walk down the dark path she had set her feet upon to the very end.

She already knew the outcome, like a prophet's gift, but she could not turn aside, even if she prepared to risk everything on a reckless gamble.

The Fearful Conspirator[]

Sythel orb

Sythel, The Fearful Conspirator

Afraid to go outside and afraid to be shut in, Sythel lived a timorous life. Usually, she was too scared to act... but not always.
—Euleria Entrati

Usually too afraid to act, Sythel had a thought: if she destroyed what she feared, then she wouldn't have to be afraid of it anymore. When she took action however, she was frightened by what she had done, and soon she began to worry about the consequences.

The more she tried to be brave, the more she feared about being found out. Soon, her Fear began to soak all throughout Duviri itself. The citizens shut their doors, barred their windows, and began to only talk in whispers. Fear ruled over Duviri, but Sythel, the embodiment of Fear, was now more afraid than ever.

Afraid of going on, but even more afraid of stopping, her resolve began to crack. Even as her plans led to disaster after disaster, Sythel still remained afraid of what was to come. As her fears allied against her, Sythel shed her human form, no longer afraid, for she had become Fear itself.
