Can I trust you? I have to. They're everywhere, plotting against me. I need you to destroy them. Every single last one.
—Sythel

Sythel, also known as The Fearful Conspirator, is one of Dominus Thrax's courtiers of Duviri. She acts as the courtier and as the Orowyrm boss during the Fear Spiral.

When not in Fear Spiral, she can be found cowering in her boarded-up home, at the top of the mountain between Titan's Rest and Clustos Arch.

Lore & History[]

General[]

Sythel is a deeply anxious and fearful woman, and can often be found in her boarded-up house with her ear to the wall. Due to her severe paranoia, her home has been left in disarray, with numerous cobwebs and candle-like lanterns littering its interior.

Sythel has an intense fear of the Void, but since Duviri resides in the Void, she is left in an indefinite state of fear and paranoia. Her severe paranoia extends to everyone in Duviri, even Dominus Thrax himself; she believes that everyone and everything, even the Tamms, are plotting against her.

Acrithis seems to dislike Sythel because of the troubles she has caused. She mentions to not show Sythel any sympathy due to her nasty ways, implying that the troubles she has caused run far deeper and are much bigger than the few that are known. Sythel herself is also wary of Acrithis, believing her to be too nosy and inquisitive.

She also mentions how Acrithis lent her books that once belonged to a strange scholar who arrived in Duviri. However, due to the contents of these books, and their presumed relation to the Void, Sythel wishes to get rid of them.

Lost Islands of Duviri[]

Sythel mentions how the first scholar to peer into the Void became afraid of it, and that his fear took shape and became real. It is believed that this scholar was Albrecht Entrati.

Sythel also talks about the Hollow Children, a group of Void manifestations that took on the appearance of black-eyed children in Duviri. Their appearance led to the loss of Academe, so it can be presumed that Sythel was around before the island was lost.

When losing control of her emotions, Sythel will also comment on the Drifter having similar eyes to the children.

Tales of Duviri - The Fearful Conspirator[]

Afraid to go outside and afraid to be shut in, Sythel lived a timorous life. Usually, she was too scared to act… but not always.

Sythel was too afraid to go outside and also afraid of being a shut in. She lived a timorous life though not always. She had a thought that if she destroyed what she feared then she wouldn't have to be afraid anymore: however, she was frightened by what she had done and began to worry about the consequences. The more brave she tried to be, the more she feared being discovered and soon her fear began to soak all throughout Duviri itself causing the citizens to shut their doors, barre their windows and talk only in whispers. Her resolve began to crack as her plans led to disaster after disaster. For an instant, Sythel would no longer be afraid when she shed her human form, for she had become Fear itself.

Trivia[]

  • During her respective Spiral, Sythel will appear to have an orb of electricity on her forehead in her transmission.
  • Like all of the couriers, she will make comments to the player when they approach. One of her quotes is Rell's infamous line: "Rap. Tap. Tap." This and other voicelines from her indicate she has seen The Man in the Wall, or, at the very least, a manifestation of the Void.
  • Unlike her fellow courtiers, Sythel used to be found in all of Duviri's Spirals, including Fear, even during her Orowyrm boss fight, most likely due to a bug. This was later fixed in a later update.
