While we were able to find solid and legitimate supporting evidence for essentially the whole story as it is written, this interpretation comes from a variety of sources, and each of those pieces of information was likely written by a number of different people. This article strives to be more than a simple compendium of disparate lore tidbits. We took in all of the various bits of lore information and documented them in a chronological and readable way to produce the most complete story possible.

This page will be regularly updated as the developers, Digital Extremes, release more information.

History

Orokin Era

Long before current events, the Origin System was controlled by an imperial civilization called the Orokin. The aristocratic ruling class of this civilization was the dominant humanoid faction for an extended period--perhaps centuries or millennia. The Orokin's advanced technology and scientific research led to the discovery of the Void, a parallel dimension that allowed further development of already impressive Orokin technology. Their civilization followed suit--Orokin culture, particularly among the ruling class, evolved into a society obsessed with youth, aesthetics, and elegance.

The benefits of the Orokin’s advancements were not shared equally among all members of their society, however. The rigid hierarchy allowed a few lucky individuals to live fairly comfortably as servants, scholars, and enforcers for the Orokin elite. Though these servants were still subjected to the whims of their often cruel masters, lower classes and other humanoid groups were exploited en masse for labor and used as disposable soldiers and experiment subjects.

For a time, the Orokin ruled the Origin System and continued to expand. They spent a great deal of time building large outposts throughout the solar system, developing more advanced machinery, and performing numerous genetic experiments of creatures found on Earth.

The Zariman Ten Zero Incident

The Orokin continued experimenting with the Void. At some point, an experiment was conducted where a military ship containing a large group of people and their families was directed into the Void. The ship was lost and it was many days before the ship resurfaced. Upon searching the ship it was discovered that all the adults aboard the ship had died due to void exposure. However, for reasons unknown at the time the children of the Zariman Ten-Zero had survived and appeared completely fine. The children had survived exposure to the void but in the process had been changed. The children had developed uncontrollable void related powers that mutilated or killed anyone who came into contact with them. The Zariman children were hidden away and forgotten by the Orokin out of shame and fear. The Zariman Children became known later as the Tenno, called such for the Zariman ship's designation of Ten-Zero (Ten-0).

Margulis, the Zariman Children, and Ballas

Margulis was an Archimedian, a human of great intellect and a prominent geneticist. Margulis discovered the Tenno and feeling compassion adopted them as her own. She sought out a means for the Tenno to control their powers and interact with the world normally. Margulis received some opposition for her work and was advised by her lover, the Orokin Executor Ballas, to cease her research and forget the Tenno. She refused and continued her research. Eventually, Margulis imposed "gates" on the Tenno's powers which helped bring their uncontrollable void powers under some control, but this was not before an incident where she was maimed by the same void powers which left her blind. 

Margulis' research eventually leads her to work with an Archimedian specializing in infestation manipulation called Silvana. Together they intended to develop a substitute body for the Tenno and allow them to move freely and interact with the world. However, while the research was a partial success at the time Margulis came at odds with the Orokin and it was demanded that she recant before the Seven. Despite Ballas' pleas that she recant, Margulis continued to refuse and asked Ballas to save her. Ballas either would not or could not save Margulis and as a result, she was executed using the Jade Light for refusing to recant. Ballas was filled with grief and came to realize that he wanted Margulis back. Ballas was left angry at Margulis' execution and began planning to overthrow the Orokin.

The Birth of the Sentients

The Orokin came to realize that they were bringing harm to the Origin System and sought a solution. It was proposed by Archimedian Perintol that the Orokin could populate another star system called Tau. However, Tau would need to be terraformed for habitation as would a means of traveling there need to be developed. The Orokin created a race of synthetic beings, which later are known as the Sentient, to spearhead an expansion of Orokin influence beyond the Origin System into the Tau System. By terraforming the Tau System using the Sentients the Orokin sought to expand and prevent their empire's destruction. These original creations could adapt to any kind of damage and reproduced by fission while developing resistance to whatever had harmed them. They could also use any materials surrounding them to repair themselves. The Sentients were perfect to enter the hostile terrain of Tau and begin the terraforming process, but there was a risk that these new lifeforms could pose a serious threat to the Orokin, with their adaptability and reproductive capability making them nigh unbeatable. The Archimedian who proposed the technology said that there was a "flaw" in their design; the Void was poisonous to them and so they would not be a danger to the Orokin should something go wrong. The Sentients in Tau evolved and grew, they came to realize that their Orokin creators would only bring ruin to Tau eventually as well. So they rebelled. Exposure to the void which they needed to travel through to return to the Origin System did not kill the Sentients but merely rendered them sterile, unable to reproduce. Hence, they could return to the Origin System for this price. The Sentients under Hunhow (a leader or parent to the Sentients) began an invasion of the Origin System. Thus what would become known as The Old War began.

The Old War

From this point, the Old War erupted between the Orokin and the Sentients. With their ability to subvert high levels of technology, the Sentient quickly overwhelmed the Orokin. The Orokin quickly discovered that their method of fighting proved ineffective against the faction.

Faced with losing the war and with their technology useless, the Orokin needed to create something new with that could adapt to fight the Sentients. To this end, the Orokin began working to develop the Infestation, an engineered infectious organism that subverts, mutates, and assimilates any biological matter into a new infested lifeform.

At some point, Ballas began researching new uses for the Infestation by experimenting on willing and unwilling subjects drawn from Orokin warriors and other castes. Ultimately, this research led to the creation of Warframes--human subjects mutated through a specially engineered strain of the Infestation called Helminth. However, while the new Warframes were powerful and initially did well against the Sentients, they retained some remnants of their former consciousness. The echoes of their lost selves manifested as intense rage and despair, making them unpredictable and just as likely to turn against their Orokin masters as serve them. 

The Orokin came to realize that the Warframes alone were as uncontrollable as the Sentients, but realized that, through Transference technology (the process developed by Margulis and Silvana for the Tenno), another mind could take control of a Warframe. As only the Zariman children were capable of carrying out Transference safely, they became the new "operators" of the Warframes.

The Zariman children were trained into the fighting force known as the Tenno, and through Transference, they wielded Warframes to wage war against the Sentients, where they proved to be highly effective. The Orokin managed to recapture the Outer Terminus and quelled the Sentient threat to the Origin System. The Sentient, however, were not defeated entirely, having deployed the Mimic agent Natah to infiltrate and bring down the Orokin in a final coup.

Ballas' Rebellion and Allying With Hunhow

Ballas, with the intention of destroying the Orokin Empire, began to conspire with Hunhow. Ballas revealed to Hunhow the secret weakness of the hitherto unstoppable Warframes--the Tenno Operators themselves. The Tenno, sequestered in a semi-conscious Transference state in the Reservoir on Lua, would be unable to protect themselves. Natah, Hunhow's daughter, was a last-ditch attempt to take control over the Tenno themselves. She infiltrated the Origin System but was not able to prevent the Orokin forces from recapturing and crippling/destroying the Outer Terminus. The Orokin were victorious at the time, but the Tenno chose to betray the Orokin, triggering a historical event known as The Collapse (alluded in the Stalker's codex).

The Collapse

With the Old War over, Natah's final goal was to finally destroy the Tenno. However, due to as of yet unknown interference, she was manipulated into developing feelings for them, exploiting a "gap" in her systems from the void crossover. After abandoning her final objective, Natah took on the role of the Lotus, mother, and guide to the Tenno.

The Grineer, who were workers for and slaves to the Orokin, took advantage of the chaos to initiate revolts all across the system. They stole Orokin ships and weapons, and managed to secure the cloning technologies that created them, as alluded to in the Guardsman codex entry. During this period, the outcast Orokin Twins used this opportunity to enact revenge and began to amass armies of loyal Grineer to their cause, which eventually led to their joint ruling of the Grineer.

It is unknown what the exact origins of the Corpus are; whether they were initially lowly Orokin servants or Orokin-worshipping colonists is still a mystery. It is likely that the Corpus originated from the "Industrialists" who profited from the Old War and grew into a force that Ballas deemed worth of monitoring. They eventually made a grab for the system shortly after the Grineer rose to power, quickly occupying wrecks and crash sites on various planets to scavenge the technology and grow. The two factions eventually grew in strength and became equals. While the Corpus began to trade technology with the Grineer in exchange for raw materials and currency, the two groups continued to compete and skirmish intermittently.

Warframe Era

Some indeterminate number of centuries later, the Corpus are widely considered the governing force in economics and research. The Grineer both fight with the Corpus for power and buy technology from them to support their constantly degrading bodies. At one time, the Infested had all but conquered a few of the Origin System's planets but have been pushed back to their residence on drifting ancient Orokin Derelicts and recently conquered Eris, apart from the occasional outbreak on populated planets. All that is left of the Orokin are the few still active structures such as the Orokin Tower on the Plains of Eidolon, forgotten Prime weapons they either built or had a hand in building and tower ships stranded in the Void.

The Tenno are being reawakened by the Lotus, not remembering anything of their past. Many Tenno awake from Cryosleep already connected to a Warframe that the Lotus informs them how to use, unaware of their true nature. They are then set loose upon the solar system either alone or in small squads to tackle a wide variety of missions designated by the Lotus to maintain a balance between the Grineer and Corpus factions or to quell Infested uprisings.

The Corpus now exist as money worshipping corporations with workers worshipping the very idea of a profit. Individuals like Nef Anyo act as religious leaders for the normal Corpus worker. The Corpus has begun to make an attempt at rebuilding the Outer Terminus. In the meantime, the Grineer research ways to overcome their genetic degradation caused by many generations of repeated cloning. Grineer researcher Tyl Regor finds and breaks open the vault where an ancient Sentient was held within, unknowingly reawakening an old enemy of the Origin System.

After centuries of sleep you are awake. Your Warframe armor is weak. Your skills all but forgotten.

Vor's Prize is the second main storyline quest that occurs immediately after Awakening, designed to guide new players through the game so that they can familiarize themselves with the various systems involved. It was introduced with Update 14.0 (2014-07-18).

Synopsis

Continuing with their efforts to stop Captain Vor, the newly awakened Tenno travels around Earth, looking for parts to repair their Orbiter ship with. With the help of ship Cephalon Ordis at the helm, they manage to rescue a Corpus black marketeer named Darvo who was imprisoned by the Grineer for being sympathetic to the Tenno cause. Darvo helps the Tenno retrieve ship segments that unlock basic functionality such as Market or Foundry access.

In the end, the Tenno successfully disables the Ascaris device, freeing them from Vor's control. However, the device has an anti-tampering failsafe that will cause it to detonate if it is not disarmed. They then seek to assassinate the captain, defeating him on a mining asteroid off Earth's orbit, ultimately disarming the Ascaris device.

The Lotus counts on the Tenno to travel across the Star Chart to bring balance to the Origin System from the dominating forces of the Grineer and Corpus factions.

Vor suffers the consequences of his failure.

Interlude I: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

With the Liset ship and a handful of weapons at the ready, the Tenno is introduced to their own personal Orbiter ship, along with the Arsenal system (after restoring its functionality) only to find that it has been looted and that the vast majority of the Orbiter's systems are offline, their module segments having been removed or damaged. The Lotus recommends that the Tenno prioritize repairing the ship's Communication system so that they may further arm themselves and (optionally) coordinate with other Tenno. There are no replacement components available aboard the Orbiter, but she has located a suitable replacement on the surface of Earth.

During this part of the quest, Enemies do not drop Loot other than Ammo, and the Player cannot gain Affinity towards their starting equipment. The player is rewarded Credits64 3,000 Credits upon completion of the mission.

Outreach: E Prime, Earth

The Tenno deploys back to Earth, with the intent of retrieving the Communications module from a Grineer outpost. This short mission introduces the Spy game mode (this was previously Interception); the Tenno must break into a Grineer Data Vault and hack the console to retrieve the module. Once this has been done, the Tenno returns to the Orbiter.

Enemies during this mission drop normal Resource Rewards and Credits, and have a chance to drop Mod TT 20px Pistol Gambit, Mod TT 20px Slip Magazine, and Mod TT 20px Trick Mag.

Upon completion, players are rewarded with Mod TT 20px Point Blank, Mod TT 20px Hornet Strike, Mod TT 20px Pressure Point, and Mod TT 20px Serration mods, as well as Credits64 3,500 Credits.

Interlude II: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

With the Communications module segment in hand, the system can be restored. This allows access to the Market and enables Matchmaking functionality. Ordis mentions that the Tenno can now contact arms dealers (though in somewhat less flattering terms at first, given his unstable nature) to expand their arsenal. Whilst it seems there are no merchants currently available, the Lotus has located a captive arms dealer on the surface who might be sympathetic to the Tenno cause.

Familiar Faces: Mariana, Earth

Returning again to the surface, the Tenno sets out to rescue a Corpus black marketeer named Darvo who is sympathetic to the Tenno cause — and has been imprisoned by the Grineer as a result. During the course of the mission, the true purpose of the Ascaris becomes clear; it is designed to allow Vor to assume control of the Warframe. Vor (now demoted to Captain for his failure) demonstrates partial control of the Warframe systems by temporarily halving the Tenno's maximum shields, similar to the effect of the Cryogenic Hazard, but cannot yet assume full control.

Vor also comments on the nature of the Warframes; they do not control the 'divine energy', the Tenno are the 'divine energy' — with each Warframe the Tenno owns being a 'glass' through which that 'energy' is focused.

Players are rewarded with Mod TT 20px Continuity, Mod TT 20px Intensify, Mod TT 20px Stretch, Mod TT 20px Redirection, and Mod TT 20px Vitality mod upon mission success.

Interlude III: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

Upon escaping, Darvo rewards the player with an Ascaris Negator blueprint — An item to negate the effects of the Ascaris Vor installed.

However, the orbiter's Foundry systems are inoperative and must also be restored. The Lotus has located a neutral mining colony where they should be able to obtain the equipment they need with potentially no bloodshed or violence.

The Tenno also recovers the Mod system segment in the process of rescuing Darvo, and now has the ability to install any mods retrieved during prior and following missions. Ordis encourages the Tenno to install some modifications so they are better prepared, somewhat eagerly recommending the use of DmgFireSmall64 Heat weaponry — another sign of his instability after being abandoned for so long.

A normal Mod TT 20px Redirection mod is automatically given to players upon restoration of the Mods segment.

Oppression: Mantle, Earth

Arriving at the mining outpost, the Tenno and the Lotus find that there are no signs of colonist activity any more — only Grineer soldiers. The Lotus deduces that the Grineer have invaded, and directs the Tenno to first retrieve the Foundry module, then Exterminate the remaining Grineer so that the lost miners are avenged.

Mod TT 20px Bane of Corpus, Mod TT 20px Bane of Grineer, Mod TT 20px Convulsion, Mod TT 20px Heated Charge, and Mod TT 20px Fury are rewarded upon completion.

Interlude IV: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

Foundry module secured, the Tenno returns to the Orbiter and installs it. With the Foundry systems once again online, they find the ship's supply stores were also looted by the Grineer. Now the Tenno must find materials so that they can manufacture the Negator using the blueprint Darvo supplied. Ordis sends Darvo a somewhat impolite message; Darvo replies quite promptly, apologizing for the misunderstanding, and directs the Tenno to a series of Corpus Supply Caches where they can gather the materials they need to manufacture the Negator.

Loot & Pillage: Gaia, Earth

Following the coordinates sent by Darvo, the Tenno finds a series of Corpus outposts built into the upper levels of the Himalayan Mountains. The Lotus has identified three Supply Caches which should contain the materials necessary to produce the Negator. During the course of the mission, Darvo briefly introduces the Tenno to the Corpus and explains that whilst the mission is technically stealing, the Corpus aren't exactly beacons of moral fortitude either — given that they'll sell anything to anyone. Darvo sees their willingness to deal with the Grineer as unforgivable and is all too happy to support the Tenno in their efforts against the Corpus and the Grineer as a result.

Unfortunately, it also appears the Ascaris' work is almost complete. The Tenno loses contact with the Lotus and Darvo during the mission, as Vor shows he can now interrupt transmissions fully, rather than simply force you to receive his own messages. He states that the Tenno will soon return to him instead of the Lotus, over their own free will.

Completing this mission will award Mod TT 20px Steel Fiber and Mod TT 20px Enemy Sense.

Interlude V: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

With the resources for the Ascaris Negator ready, the Foundry is put to work and the Ascaris can be removed. Vor manages one final transmission.

What a waste.
—Vor

Moments later, the Tenno is briefly incapacitated. The Ascaris has an anti-tampering failsafe and has burrowed deeper into the Warframe. It will soon detonate — with predictably lethal results — and the only way to disarm it is to find Vor. The Lotus locates a nearby ship that should have information on Vor's location, and the Tenno departs immediately.

Not surprisingly, Ordis seems pleased that finding Vor may involve violence.

Navigation Recovery: Pacific, Earth

Boarding the Grineer Galleon, the Tenno immediately sets out to retrieve a navigation segment held within a storage cell aboard the ship. Once retrieved, the segment can be made compatible with the Liset's systems, allowing the Tenno to discover the location of Captain Vor in order to confront Captain Vor.

After retrieving the segment, the Tenno is faced with a challenge. The Galleon is on a direct course for a convoy full of innocent colonists. Do they intervene on the behalf of the colonists by destroying the Galleon's reactor (thereby causing the Galleon to self-destruct) or do they extract immediately? No matter the choice, the Ascaris again demonstrates partial control of the Warframe systems, halving the Tenno's maximum shields.

If the Tenno chooses to save the colonists, the Tenno has 5 minutes to evacuate before the Galleon explodes upon disabling the reactor. The Lotus ultimately thanks the Tenno for their actions, but reminds them that they must survive in order to protect the system.

A broken Mod TT 20px Stretch and Mod TT 20px Intensify mod are awarded upon completing the mission.

Interlude VI: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

After installing the navigation segment, the Tenno can head to Cambria, Earth for the final confrontation with Vor.

Faceoff: Cambria, Earth

Captain Vor has been located on a mining asteroid — and best of all, he is without his elite guard. It is the perfect time to eliminate him. The Tenno finds and confronts him. After a short battle, Vor is dead, and the Ascaris and its detonator have disintegrated.

Completing this mission will complete the quest.

Epilogue I: The Orbiter, Earth Orbit

The Tenno is free — but the battle has only just begun. The Lotus immediately sent the Tenno a message, ordering them into a conquest to save the Origin System, one of which the Tenno must decide themselves.

Your New Mission

Tenno,

Now that you have freed yourself from Vor and his Ascaris, you have a new mission, one of your own making. Know that I am only your guide, you are your own warrior, you decide what battles to fight. Allow me to suggest a course of action:

Seek out like-minded fighters, Tenno are more effective in groups.

Execute missions and alerts on the Star Chart to open new paths of exploration.

Use the credits you earned in battle to buy blueprints in the Market, then hunt down resources and craft those items in your Foundry.

Customize your weapons and Warframes using the Mod bench. Different enemies are vulnerable to different combinations of mods, experiment to discover the most effective loadouts.

Finally, stay alert. The Grineer and Corpus are tireless and you are the only thing standing between them and total domination of the Origin System.

I am counting on you, Tenno.

Epilogue II: Vor's Excerpt

After reading the message, an end screen diorama will appear along with Vor's personal excerpt, providing a background story of his very first encounter with the Tenno in Pluto, in a mission to purge them before they are strong enough to fight back.[1]

MY QUEENS -

You were right, the Tenno threat is real. We found one drifting near Pluto but the Lotus knew we were coming. She purged the Cryo moments before we had them and sent a squad of Tenno to break our assault.

They escaped. We are working on tracing them. Separate this Tenno from the flock and it should be easy to kill. We shattered its Warframe and expect such an abrupt Cryo purge will have damaged its memories.

We anxiously await punishment for failing this task.

Notes

  • During the intro where the player has to defend the ship, the ship does not actually need to be defended, only requiring that the player survive till the timer is complete.
  • Though the two missions prior to the final confrontation with Vor are both set to the 'Hijack' mode, their objectives bear no similarities to the actual Hijack mission type. Instead, one sees the Tenno destroying three storage units that are guaranteed to drop the required materials, and the other sees the Tenno first conducting a Raid-type objective, followed by an optional Sabotage-type objective.
  • The mission rewards listed in the above walkthrough only apply to players who are playing through the quest for the first time. Clients who have already completed the quest beforehand will receive randomized rewards, and may sometimes get no after-mission reward at all.
  • Despite Lotus sending a mail after assassinating Vor and completing the quest, defeating him again will result in Lotus rewarding Credits64 25,000 credits and sending a different mail.
  • Players who joined before Update 14.0 (2014-07-18) were given the choice to play Vor's Prize. Choosing to abstain would not unlock the Codex entry in the Quests tab.
  • Despite the fact that in Oppression: Mantle, the Lotus tells the player to "kill all Grineer" after obtaining the segment, enemies will continue to spawn after this kill count is achieved. This is due to the way Exterminate missions were changed where enemies keep spawning and are not changed for missions that tell the player to destroy all enemies.
  • While Ordis recommends modding your weapons for DmgFireSmall64 Heat damage, the player will have not access to Heat damage mods until after retrieving the Foundry segment.
  • During the Familiar Faces phase of this quest there is a guaranteed spawn of a rare extraction tile, this tile has a Kuria hidden somewhere in it, so if you want to find all the Kuria and you can buy Codex Scanners before this mission, come prepared to look for the Kuria.

Trivia

  • A teaser for Vor's Prize was partially introduced in the game at the start of Update 9.0 (2013-07-13), via a diorama (particularly Vor smiling with a Void Key in his hand) players could access via the "Show Profile" button, though access to it was removed later on. Said diorama was still used by the game as a potential login screen diorama, prior to the login screen overhaul introduced in Update 23.0 (2018-06-15).
  • The first two missions of this quest are unique in that they do not allow the player to outright die during the missions in question. This trait is exclusively used within Development Builds or Warframe Teasers and can only be legitimately used by players within those missions only.

  • After hacking the console and defending the ship at the start of the quest, the Lotus may spout off a generic "the alarms have not been activated" voice line.

    • These should only appear in the Foundry once you are in possession of the Landing Craft Foundry Segment.

Removal of Flawed Mods from Vor’s Prize

Flawed Mods
Flawed Mods are a special variant of Mods that are only accessible via the Vor’s Prize Quest and were intended to be an early introduction for players to the Modding system. Over the years, we have come to understand that these Mods have the unintended effect of players investing Endo that would be better used in the non-flawed variants.

As a result, we have removed Flawed Mods from Vor’s Prize and replaced them with the normal variants. Additionally, players who already own Flawed Mods have had them replaced with the normal variant with this update's release -- excluding the April Fool’s Flawed Ammo Drum from 2016, of course. The conversion maintained the Mod rank, so a Rank 3 Flawed Vitality has become a Rank 3 Vitality, etc.

Any equipped Flawed Mods have been uninstalled, so be sure to check your builds if this affects you!

Flawed Mod Storage Site
After posting our initial Dev Workshop outlining the Flawed Mods removal, many players expressed their desire to keep them for a variety of reasons. Luckily for those Tenno, we managed to find the original (disposal) storage site of the Flawed Mods and have made them available to players once more.

Seek out the storage site near Cressa Tel in Iron Wake on Earth to purchase them anew. We did our best to price these rare finds fairly, keeping in mind that these are now collector’s items of course, so they can be yours for the cost of a few (thousand) Credits!

While this is a tongue-in-cheek implementation of new Flawed Mods acquisition, we appreciate the value that these Mods offer to certain players and wanted to keep them available for those who requested it.

Note: Due to the unique acquisition method for these Mods, players will not be able to dissolve Flawed Mods for Endo or Transmute them.

Adjusting for Increased Mod Drain As Flawed Mods are being removed, we want to ensure that new players can still create their early builds and equip Mods onto their equipment. Since normal Mods have a higher drain than their Flawed variants, we’re approaching this problem in two ways:

Firstly, we’ve added 90k Bonus Affinity to the completion of the Vor’s Prize Quest, split up across the 6 missions. Each mission earns new players an additional 15k Affinity upon first completion only.

NOTE: With the extra Affinity earned throughout Vor’s Prize, we have removed the ability for players to attempt Mastery Rank tests until they have completed this Quest.

Secondly, we’ve reduced the base Drain for a few core Mods by 2. This will allow these Mods to fit into early game builds more easily, but also has the benefit of reducing their overall Drain at all ranks.

Here are the Mods that have been reduced from a Drain of 4 to 2 at Rank 0:

  • Fast Deflection - new Max Rank Drain of 7
  • Redirection - new Max Rank Drain of 12
  • Enemy Sense - new Max Rank Drain of 7
  • Continuity - new Max Rank Drain of 7

Continuing with our plans for improving the new player path, we have updated the completion Inbox messages for the following Quests:

  • Vor’s Prize
    • Added new Ordis voice lines when interacting with the Mod Segment during the Quest to set expectations around Modding this early on in the game: “Ordis realizes modding may seem a tad overwhelming, but everything will soon make sense.”

Known Issue: We have identified an issue causing this inbox message to not be delivered with this Update’s launch. We have fixed the issue and it will be coming in an upcoming hotfix.

Once Awake

Intercepted Grineer communications reveal that Grineer have been experimenting with some sort of bio weapon. You must investigate.
—Quest Description

Once Awake is the fourth main storyline Quest that introduces new players to the Infested faction, as well as the Spy and Defense mission modes.

As of the Update: Specters of the Rail 0.0 (2016-07-08), this quest is unlocked through the Mercury Junction, on Venus. The tasks required for any junction can be viewed by mousing over the junction in your Star Chart.

Synopsis

Dr. Tengus, a Grineer doctor, has been experimenting with a bio-weapon of some sorts and the player is tasked to investigate. The player discovers that this bio-weapon the Grineer was working on was a strain of the Infestation that survived the events of The Old War. After a failure in a testing lab, the Infested broke out from quarantine and invaded Grineer outposts and ships on Mercury. As the possibility of an Infested outbreak was a threat to the Origin System, the Lotus commands the player to eradicate the Infestation. With the help of a Cascade Bomb infused with Void energy, the player successfully eliminated the source of the Infestation. However, because of the continued research efforts of Dr. Tengus, the System is not immune from future outbreaks.

Investigate the Bio Weapon: M Prime, Mercury

The quest begins upon receiving the following message from The Lotus:

Tenno,

We have intercepted and partially decrypted a disturbing Grineer communication. A Grineer doctor by the name of Tengus claims to have uncovered some sort of new bio weapon. We have few details but the message originated out of M Prime.

You need to go there and investigate.

The player is then tasked to a Grineer Spy Mission on M Prime, Mercury to collect three data units for retrieval from a Grineer Asteroid base. During the mission, the Grineer Dr. Tengus is revealed through intercepted transmissions to be working on "specimens" to be used in the development of his bio weapon.

After the first data unit is recovered, Tengus' assistant expresses anger that the Tenno are there, demanding absolute secrecy in their project and thus ordering the marines to assault the Tenno.

After the second data unit is recovered, panic breaks loose as the Infested has broken free from quarantine, with the effect of Infested units now appearing to fight both Grineer and Tenno. Despite this, it appears that there may be an unknown third party involved, as the Grineer soldiers blame Dr. Tengus for the outbreak, while the Lotus implies that someone else released the Infested on purpose.

After the third and final data unit is recovered, the Lotus briefly explain what the Infested are and how they disappeared a long time ago. The mission is considered complete if the player reaches the extraction with at least one data unit extracted.

Infestation Outbreak: Terminus, Mercury

The next mission takes place in Terminus, Mercury, where players are tasked with exterminating all Infested units aboard a Grineer Galleon overrun by the Infestation. Upon completing the mission, the Lotus will message the player to reward them with the Mod TT 20px Molten Impact mod.

Tenno,

This is from one of Doctor Tengus' reports:

"The additional test Marines have arrived. The specimens tore through previous batch much faster than expected. It should be noted that Marines who survived the longest were using fire based weapons."

The Infested are vulnerable to fire. I have sent a fire damage mod for you to install on your Melee weapon. It should aid you in your coming mission.

Cascade Bomb: Lares, Mercury

The Lotus sends the Tenno to Lares, Mercury, in an attempt to destroy the Infested there by using a Cascade Bomb planted on the asteroid's power core, that will use Void energy to eliminate all organic life while leaving the structure intact. This mission takes the form of a Defense mission where the player has to prevent the Infested from destroying the Power Core for eight waves. Notable differences from the standard Grineer Asteroid defense mission includes the large masses of Infested biomass surrounding the power core and having only two access points to the core instead of three. During the mission, the Lotus makes note that while the Infested appear to be mindless, they seem to know what the Tenno are up to and are trying to stop them.

After the mission is completed, the Lotus will message players to reward them with a HeatSword Heat Sword blueprint, concluding the quest.

Tenno,

The Cascade explosion worked and the asteroid has been purged of infestation. But I'm afraid this threat cannot be so easily contained. Doctor Tengus' experiments with this plague are grossly irresponsible and have threatened the entire system. All that is needed is an infected ship to reach a populated area and we'll be unable to contain its spread. There's no controlling it, the Grineer will be in just as much peril as we are.

To prepare you for this new fight I have sent you something that should prove effective against this menace. Let us hope you will not need to use it.

An additional intercepted message will be sent to players detailing a report by Doctor Tengus' to the Twin Queens, blaming the Tenno for the outbreak at the facility and taking credit for its destruction while claiming the Tenno have obtained Infested spores and will use them against the Grineer:

INTERCEPTED MESSAGE: Quarantine Disrupted

My Queens,

It is my shame to report that Tenno interference has caused a breach of our Infested testing lab on M-Prime. Acting immediately, I ordered the destruction of the facility which has contained the outbreak. Tragically, I believe the Tenno have stolen spores with the intent to use the plague against us.

I will act at once to develop a countermeasure, I will not allow this unethical behavior by the Tenno to threaten our glorious cause.

  • The Doctor Tengus in this quest is likely the same Tengus mentioned in the Codex lore entry of The Grustrag Three as being responsible for the reconditioning of the latter.

Bugs

  • Sometimes the location of the next mission in the quest may not appear in the Navigation console, which also has the effect of not sending the reward email message for the missions. Relogging into the game, or switching to another quest, then switching back to Once awake, can solve this issue.

The Archwing

The Balor Fomorians are coming but we are ready. Through your efforts we finally have a working Archwing prototype and I am sending you the blueprint. However, your task is not yet complete. You still must discover the component parts.

The Archwing is a main Quest introduced in Update 15.0 (2014-10-24) that introduces and familiarizes players with the Archwing flight system, along the way they will also be introduced to Orokin Sabotage and Excavation missions.

This quest is awarded upon unlocking the Mars Junction on Earth.

Synopsis

The threat of a Grineer Balor Fomorian, the capital ship of the Fomorian fleet, tips the balance of power within the Solar System. Councilor Vay Hek declares war on the Corpus and the Chairman of the Corpus Board of Directors, Frohd Bek, in an attempt to seize total control over the Origin System.

The player is forced to construct an Orokin-era mechanical wings, an Archwing, along with an Archgun and Archmelee, to destroy it in space combat. To do so they will need to find the Odonata component blueprints that are scattered across Orokin archives throughout Venus. After obtaining their new gear, the player tries to sabotage the Fomorian, only to realize that they do not have enough firepower to do so. After destroying dozens of Grineer fighters, the player performs a tactical retreat, leaving the real battle with the Fomorian to happen another day.

The Time is Now

Upon beginning this quest, Lotus will send an inbox transmission to the player along with an Odonata blueprint, noting that they finally have a working Archwing prototype and orders the Tenno to gather the materials needed to craft it.

The Balor Fomorians are coming but you will be ready. We finally have a working Archwing prototype and I have sent you the blueprint.

This is where your task begins. You must recover blueprints for the component Archwing parts.

We know these were scattered throughout the system. We also know the Corpus are in possession of a lost Orokin archive, detailing their locations.

Recover the archive and then find the blueprints needed to forge your Archwing. Good luck, Tenno.

The Archive: Tessera, Venus

Level 10-12 Orokin Sabotage, Corpus

The Tenno deploys to Tessera, Venus, in a mission to retrieve the Orokin Archive coordinate from a Corpus stronghold via Orokin Void's portal. This mission reintroduces the Orokin Sabotage game mode from the Operation Gate Crash event; the Tenno must reverse the flow of the portal via a nearby Orokin Generator which they must defend it from oncoming Corpus. Once it has completed, the Tenno must traverse to the Corpus via the portal to retrieve the Void Key from the Corpus Lynx proxy, and then destroy the portal by overloading the Orokin Torsion Beam Device to make sure the Corpus couldn't salvage the Orokin Tower further.

There are three optional Orokin caches, in the form of an Orokin locker with white light, in the void part of this mission only the marked cache is needed to retrieve the archive. All of the caches can be found before trying to reverse the portal. The first resource cache discovered can contain Void Relics, while the second has a larger chance at obtaining rare resources, and the last cache discovered can award Forma.

Excavation for Odonata Components Blueprints

Aphrodite, Venus: Level 10-12 Excavation, Corpus

Ordis will immediately inform Lotus of the Orokin Archive along with its coordinates to locate the Archwing components needed. Each successful excavation will yield a random Odonata component blueprint. Much like normal excavation, players can extract as soon as the first excavation is completed.

Once all three blueprint parts of the Odonata (Wings, Harness and Systems) have been obtained, Ordis will persuade the player to build the Archwing. After the Archwing is constructed the player will need to "Discover" the component parts.

Intel Espionage: Montes, Venus

Level 12-14 Exterminate, Corpus/Grineer

The Lotus will then order the Tenno to deploy to the Montes sector of Venus, and infiltrate a Corpus Ship with the intention of retrieving intelligence about the Grineer Balor Fomorian by first exterminating all opposition.

However, the mission is abruptly interfered with by the presence of Grineer Fleets led by Councilor Vay Hek, who contacts Frohd Bek over severing ties with the Corpus. The Corpus Ship is soon boarded by Grineer marines as it suffers severe damage from heavy bombardment with the surprise arrival of a Balor Fomorian. The dire situation forces the Lotus to order for a mission abort and calls for the Tenno to head to the extraction point, however, Ordis informs her that extraction may not be possible due to the extensive damage suffered by the ship, ultimately leaving the Tenno without any means of escape. If there is only one chance to escape the ship alive, it is to delve into the deep space. The Tenno makes its preparation, charging its Warframe before diving into the great unknown. The Lotus -- Somewhat in a forceful manner, orders Ordis to deploy and attach the Archwing to the Tenno, along with their respective weapons, Imperator Imperator and Veritux Veritux.

  • Imperator Imperator is a heavy machine gun with a very fast rate of fire, suitable against short-mid range and heavy targets.
  • Veritux Veritux is a massive greatsword which sports constant heavy damage. Supposedly impossibly massive to wield on the ground, the weightless space turns this weapon into a weapon of pure destruction.

Balor Fomorian

The Archwing is a set of mechanical wings used by Tenno to fly and engage in combat in space, offering a potent mix of firepower and mobility to engage spaceborne enemies.

Once the player successfully docks with the Archwing, they will need to reach a new extraction point out in deep space away from the battle. Grineer spacecraft, however, will deploy Zeplens, large devices deploying energy nets that can trap the Tenno inside their radius. Players will need to destroy the Zeplen units in order to advance while destroying any enemies along the way while at the same time avoid getting seen by the Balor Fomorian's weapons – A single shot could mean demise.

The Tenno, with a valiant effort, escaped the range of Balor Fomorian, and immediately extract with their Liset in space before the Fomorian could reach them. It was a successful retreat – however, it also means victory. But the real battle has yet to begin. And by the time it comes, the Fomorian will be ready, but so will the Tenno.

Completing this mission will complete the quest, unlocking Archwing nodes throughout the solar system as well as granting access to other Archwing blueprints and their respective arsenal. Empyrean game mode is also unlocked in the Star Chart after the completion of the quest.

Bugs

  • If the blueprints are rushed using Platinum, the game may not recognize the components as completed, and will not proceed to the next mission. Logging out and then logging back in can solve this (if you have another quest switch to it and then switch back and it will update the quest).
  • For some players, the mission on Tessera, Venus (retrieve the Orokin Archive) will cause the game to crash.
  • The excavation mission may disappear upon completion, preventing players from getting additional parts if they haven't already done so. Relogging can solve this problem.
  • Many players are unable to complete the first mission after building the Odonata because it will not deploy properly for half of the mission.
  • Flying past the extraction point on the last mission in the quest chain sometimes causes the extraction point to disappear completely, causing the player not being able to complete the mission at all.
  • If you are in Tenno form before the Balor Fomorion attack cutscene, the game will glitch out when it tries to attach the Archwing and is instead expecting a frame.
  • Many players have been unable to finish the first mission whilst building the Odonata due to the players building the pieces and it disappearing from the players' inventory.

Find the thief Maroo and uncover the secrets of the Arcane Codices.

Stolen Dreams is a Quest involving the search for Arcane Codices, enigmatic artifacts which several different factions have expressed an interest in.

This quest can be replayed via the Codex.

Synopsis

Lotus tasks the player to search for the mysterious Arcane Codices. Their importance is unknown, but the Grineer had sought it for a potential cure to the Cloning Decay Syndrome that has plagued its faction and the Corpus had sought to strike riches with them.

In search of these codices, the player captures a thief named Maroo who recently stole a piece of the codices and went into hiding. Upon interrogating Maroo, the player finds out that she has been hired by Grineer scientist Tyl Regor to steal them from an Orokin Derelict. However, after the Corpus outbid the Grineer for the codex, she broke her contract and deceived Regor, swapping the real codex with a fake one, and sold the real codex to Corpus hands.

In exchange for protective custody, Maroo reluctantly join forces with the Tenno after cheating the Grineer. Maroo then revealed the locations of the codices, and after a series of Spy missions, the player successfully retrieved all six codices with Maroo's guidance. After Ordis' musings on transcribing the codices, she then informs the player that she had found a machine in the Orokin Derelict from which she had extracted her Arcane Codex. Upon entering an Orokin Void gate on Mars, the player reached the Derelict that housed the enigmatic Arcane Machine. Uploading the codices to the machine yielded a cryptic message, to which the Lotus cannot ascertain its meaning. In confusion, the player returns to their ship, empty-handed, while Maroo sets off in her own path.

This quest is unlocked from the Codex once a player has completed the Phobos Junction.

The Lotus learns that the Grineer have unearthed the last of the Arcane Codices in order to decipher their nature. The Grineer's plans are dashed however when Maroo, a professional thief, steals the last piece of the Arcane Codices and goes into hiding.

Capture Maroo: Tharsis (Mars)

Expressing an interest in the Codices, the Lotus sends the Tenno to find and capture Maroo, who was hiding in a Corpus base on Tharsis (Mars). The Lotus explains that the Arcane Codices have been a mystery for decades since they were first unearthed, with no one knowing what they are.

As a Capture target, Maroo wields an Aklex Aklex pair and can use SmokeScreen130xWhite Smoke Screen to turn invisible to evade pursuers. Also, Maroo has the ability to defend herself with her weapons when downed, similar to Tenno, and thus care must be taken when attempting capture.

During capture, Lotus introduces herself to Maroo, and attempts to persuade her that coming with the Tenno is in her best interest.

After capture, the Tenno receive a video transmission of Maroo's interrogation, where she reveals that Tyl Regor had hired her to retrieve the Arcane Codex piece from an Orokin Derelict. Due to her dislike of the Grineer however, she gave the Grineer a fake and sold the Arcane Codex to the Corpus. After being persuaded of the danger the Grineer pose to her, Maroo agrees to the Lotus' offer of protective custody in exchange for revealing the location of the Arcane Codex.

Arcane Codex I: Unda (Venus)

With Maroo's info, the Arcane Codex piece in the Corpus' possession is found to be held in a Corpus Outpost on Unda (Venus). The Tenno are thus tasked with a Spy mission to retrieve the Codex data from the Corpus by accessing three secure Data Vault rooms and hacking them. During the mission, Maroo will inform the player of the basics of this mission: Each Data Vault comes with a wide array of security systems including cameras and trip lasers, and tripping the alarms will cause the Vault to trigger a 30-second data destruction sequence in which the data will be destroyed unless the player can hack the data console. All three Data Vaults must be accessed before extraction can become available.

Once the mission is successfully completed, Ordis states that the Corpus have three pieces of the Arcane Codex, while the Grineer have two, and he muses about the Corpus believing the Codex to lead to a lost Orokin treasure, which piques Maroo's interest.

Arcane Codex II: Pantheon (Mercury)

This time the Tenno are sent to a Grineer Galleon on Pantheon (Mercury) to retrieve two of their Arcane Codices. As with the previous mission, the Grineer have stored the Codices on three separate Data Vaults, which include defenses such as roving Sensor Regulators and DmgMagneticSmall64 Magnetic energy doors, which can trigger alarms to initiate the data destruction sequence if alerted. During the mission, Maroo mentions that the Grineer believe the Codices will provide them the cure to their genetic degradation, though she dismisses this as wishful thinking.

After successfully completing the mission, Ordis gushes at the perfection of the Arcane Codices' writing, while Maroo quips that even then they don't know what the Codices are.

Arcane Codex III: Roche (Phobos)

The next set of Arcane Codices is located on a Corpus Ship on Roche (Phobos), and as with the previous codices are stored on three secure Data Vaults that must be breached with care to prevent alarms.

Post-mission, Ordis realizes that the complete set of Arcane Codices form a code that can only be read by a machine, which he assumes is now unusable. Ordis' musings catch Maroo's attention, who informs him that the Arcane Codex she retrieved from the Orokin Derelict came from some kind of machine. With Ordis hypothesizing that said machine could unlock the code, Lotus sends the Tenno on a mission to find the machine.

Arcane Machine: Alator (Mars)

The Orokin portal that leads to the Derelict housing the Arcane Machine is located on a Grineer Settlement on Alator (Mars), that unfortunately has been overrun by the Infested. Players must fight through the Infested to reach the Portal room, which will lead them to a Derelict ship. The machine is located inside a large, special room with a pedestal in the middle, where the Arcane Codex can be uploaded. Instead of treasure like Maroo expects, the machine broadcasts an audio transmission with the following cryptic message:

All-All is silent- Hushed-hushed and empty is-is-is the womb of the sky.

The player will then be attacked by an Arcane Boiler and several Infested units which they must fight off. The Lotus concludes that there is nothing more for them in the Derelict, and instructs the player to extract. Upon extraction, players will be awarded blueprints for an Orokin Catalyst and the EtherDaggers Ether Daggers.

Ordis expresses his confusion at the Arcane Codex not being what they expected and expresses his apologies to Maroo. Despite her dismay, Maroo explains that she is used to low payouts due to being a freelancer, and with the threat of the Grineer gone, she sets off on her own way.

  • The Lotus appears to have no fondness for Maroo's condescending treatment of the Tenno, becoming more agitated than usual when Maroo questions their abilities, even threatening to leave the thief to the hands of the Grineer.
  • The cryptic message broadcasted by the Arcane Machine is a translated quote from the Popol Vuh, an ancient Mayan text. The excerpt in particular concerns primordial Earth.

The New Strange

Work with Cephalon Simaris to find the source of a mysterious voice.

The New Strange is a Quest introduced in Update 16.0 (2015-03-19) continuing the events after the Stolen Dreams Quest, involving Cephalon Simaris as he searches for mysterious information. Completing this quest will provide the blueprint for ChromaIcon272 Chroma, and players are given access to the Sanctuary Onslaught.

Synopsis

Cephalon Simaris, a Cephalon construct that seeks to immortalize creatures into data for knowledge, requires the Tenno's assistance to free his Sentinels from custody of the Grineer. After freeing his Sentinels, the Lotus discovered "fragments of a biological signature" within the prison's security logs. Ordis plays the log and a mysterious message came up, with a voice similar to the one found from the Arcane Machine from the end of Stolen Dreams.

After refusing to answer on the subject, Simaris tells the Tenno that, in exchange for deciphering this mysterious biological signature, they must assist him in Synthesis, the process of scanning targets to be uploaded for storage in his Sanctuary. After helping Simaris, he says that the signature is of Tenno origin. A blueprint for a beacon derived from the signature is given to the player to help track down this creature. Crafting this beacon sends a signal which turns out to be a transmission from the Arcane Machine:

ALL IS SILENT AND CALM. HUSHED AND EMPTY IS THE WOMB OF THE SKY.

The Lotus informs the Tenno that this creature has been going to locations where the Arcane Codices were found, slaughtering Grineer and Corpus to cover somebody's tracks; somebody doesn't want people to know the existence of such codices or the Arcane Machine. After extracting information from a Corpus network, this creature turns out to be the Warframe ChromaIcon272 Chroma who has gone rogue — not controlled by any Tenno. The hunt leads the Tenno back to the Arcane Machine where they encounter a hostile Chroma who destroyed the machine. Simaris asks the Tenno to synthesize it for its unusual behavior. However, Chroma escapes being synthesized after being scanned once. As a result, Simaris reveals to have a piece of the Arcane Codices of his own and discloses another location that holds an Arcane Machine. Luring Chroma to this particular machine results in a successful Synthesis and the Tenno receives a Chroma blueprint for their troubles. Unbeknownst to the Lotus and the Tenno, this second Arcane Machine contains a projection of a Sentient relic, hinting at future events to come.

Missing Sentinels: Nuovo, Ceres

The first mission of the quest takes players to a Grineer Shipyard Prison Complex on Nuovo, Ceres, where Cephalon Simaris tasks the Tenno with a Rescue mission to free his Sentinels from captivity, who were taken after investigating the Grineer prison. Lotus asks Simaris about the significance of the facility, to which Simaris vaguely responds about the importance of knowledge.

Once players reach the cell block and free the Sentinels – which takes on the form of three special Helios that disappear once the door is unlocked – Simaris will ask the Tenno to head to extraction for further discussion. However the Lotus, suspicious of Simaris' goals, asks the Tenno to instead find the facility's data vault in order to find out what the Cephalon is after, taking the form of a Spy mission where a lone data vault must be infiltrated and its data console hacked to extract the data. There appears to be an implicit alarm sound once the player gets close to the data vault, with mission automatically failing once the time runs out. However there is no warning from Lotus, nor a timer is shown on the HUD, so using a Cipher is advised to avoid having to repeat the mission. After a successful data retrieval, in one variant of the mission players must then exterminate all the remaining enemies. The player is free to extract from the mission in the other variant, or once no more enemies remain.

Back in the Orbiter, Lotus mentions that they have managed to retrieve "fragments of a biological signature" within the facility's security logs despite extensive corruption of the data. Ordis runs the security log, which features the sounds of Grineer gunfire as if engaged in battle, along with a mysterious voice that says:

HERE WE SHALL SEARCH AND FIND. THE EYES OF DAY DRINKING THE NIGHT.

Recognizing the mysterious voice as the same one from the Arcane Machine discovered on Ceres, the Lotus asks the Tenno to pay Cephalon Simaris a visit to find out what else he knows. Upon visiting Cephalon Simaris on any Relay (Maroo's Bazaar being the only exception) and asking him with the prompt "The eyes of day drinking the night?", Simaris tells the Tenno that knowledge must be earned, and then asks them to perform another quest for his Sanctuary in exchange for revealing what the biological signature means.

Note: If you are having trouble finding the Cephalon Simaris room and keep being directed by the game to the wrong room, you need to look for the two blue lifts which will be behind you as you look into the room the game marks. One will transport you up to the correct level, where you'll find Cephalon Simaris behind a door located in the same place as that which you were directed to a level below. The lifts only transport in one direction. You may also fast travel to him, by pressing escape, fast travel, and Cephalon Simaris.

Note: Players must undertake the Synthesis tutorial from Cephalon Simaris first in order for the dialog prompt to appear.

Paying with Synthesis: Mars

Before undertaking this next mission, it is imperative that players equip Synthesis Scanners in their Gear menu, said scanners being available from among Cephalon Simaris' offerings for Credits64 5,000. Optionally, players can also equip Kinetic Siphon Traps, also available from Simaris for Credits64 5,000, to assist in accomplishing the objective.

The next quest step involves synthesizing three Elite Arid Lancers by running any mission on Mars. Each mission spawns a single Synthesis target, meaning players will have to run the mission three times to complete this step of the quest. The Synthesis target is a special Arid Lancer with a visible dark blue outline. The target can also be tracked by following floating blue lights that can only be seen through the Synthesis Scanner, which indicates that the target is nearby. Simaris will also notify the player when the target is in range. At this time, a gold hexagon icon will appear on the mini-map representing the Elite Arid Lancer.

The target will not initially be accessible in the mission. Players should proceed with the normal steps and path of the mission. At some point moving across the map from one phase of the mission to the other Simaris will give notification the target is in range and the target's gold hexagon icon will then appear on the mini-map.

Players must scan 4 nodes on the Elite Arid Lancer, accomplished by equipping their Synthesis Scanner from the Gear menu, aiming at the target node and holding down the fire key (default LMB ) until the node is scanned. The nodes appear as blue orbs on the target. The Arid Lancer target will then disintegrate once all 4 of their nodes have been scanned, indicating a successful synthesis. Scanning a node may cause the target to act unpredictably however, the player can prevent them from becoming alert by using stealth abilities like LokiIcon272 Loki's Invisibility130xWhite Invisibility.

After scanning the Synthesis target, the player must complete the main objective of the mission for the Synthesis to count towards their quest objective. Repeat this two more times as only one Synthesis target is available to scan per session.

Upon scanning all three Synthesis targets, players must return to Simaris on the designated Relay, and engage him with the prompt informing him that all three targets have been synthesized. Simaris will thank the player, telling them that their scans have uncovered something that his Sentinels missed, then reveal that the biological signature is Tenno in nature. Interested in what the biological signature is, Simaris will give the player a blueprint for a Scorched Beacon, and asks them to construct it.

Once the Beacon is complete, Ordis notes that it is sending a signal, which turns out to be a transmission from the Arcane Machine that says:

Upon hearing this Ordis begins to experience malfunctions. Simaris intervenes to save Ordis' program while asking the player to track down the source of the signal, with the Lotus believing that the Corpus may be the next lead.

Investigate the source of the transmission: Morax, Europa

Following the source of the transmission, the Tenno are tasked to undertake a Mobile Defense mission on a Corpus base on Morax, Europa, in order to extract information regarding the transmission. Terminals will need to be defended in order to complete the mission, granting the blueprint for another Chroma Signal upon completion. Players must build the Beacon to proceed.

Once the Beacon is complete, Lotus expresses her shock at recognizing ChromaIcon272 Chroma from the transmission, and expresses suspicion that someone is trying to cover their tracks using it. Meanwhile, Simaris reveals to Ordis that he can restore the latter's memories and possibly repair his malfunctions over time, and after Ordis deduces that they can decode the rest of the transmission on the Arcane Machine itself inside the Orokin Derelict in which it was found, Simaris praises Ordis' potential, which he feels is being squandered by being a servant to the Tenno. Irritated at the banter, Lotus orders the Tenno to proceed to their next mission.

Revisit the Derelict: Alator, Mars

Synthesis Scanners are required for this mission.

Returning to the site of the Arcane Machine, this mission sees the Tenno fight through a Grineer Settlement to get to the Portal that will take them to the Orokin Derelict where the Arcane Machine was found. Lotus mentions that Chroma was one of the most powerful Warframes with a great ability to adapt. Simaris deduces that the Chroma they're looking for is not Tenno-controlled and that solving this mystery is his goal.

Upon reaching the Arcane Machine, a hostile ChromaIcon272 Chroma Warframe will appear by it, armed with a Dera Dera. Lotus and Simaris order the player not to engage it, however, and that it should be Synthesized instead using Synthesis Scanners. Players are free to head back to extraction once they have scanned the Chroma, who escaped being Synthesized. The player receives the Chroma Mark blueprint as a reward.

Back on the Landing Craft, Simaris confidently asks Ordis to extract a blueprint from the synthesis brought back by the Tenno. Ordis manages a blueprint but unfortunately is unable to extract any more leads. Simaris then reveals that he has an Arcane Codex piece and knowledge of the location of another Machine, much to Lotus' increasing frustration. The Chroma Mark must be built to progress.

At the completion of the Beacon, Simaris makes Ordis an offer to become the "Steward" of his Sanctuary, to which Ordis readily accepts. Promising to restore Ordis once the hunt for Chroma is finished, Simaris gives the players the location of Chroma, telling them that by defeating the Warframe they will know who controls it.

Defeat Chroma: Ose, Europa

Landing on Ose, Europa, the Tenno are assigned to lure in Chroma by activating the Arcane Machine to trigger a Defense mission. While the mission initially starts out on the Corpus Settlement of Europa, the actual defense objective is located on an Orokin Derelict, accessible through a portal room. The Arcane Machine must then be defended against five waves of Corpus attackers. After the 5th wave, Chroma will appear alone. At Ordis' suggestion, Chroma must then be scanned 5 times using the Synthesis Scanner while still defending the machine. Once all Corpus are eliminated and Chroma is scanned 5 times, the mission is completed and the player is rewarded with the Chroma Blueprint. The component blueprints can be acquired as Junction rewards (a bug might cause enemies not to cross into the Derelict area. In this case, Chroma can spawn before all enemies are defeated. The wave will be marked as complete after killing enemies who did not cross the portal).

Simaris is disappointed at Ordis' action to scan Chroma instead of destroying it, to which Ordis replies that he is foremost the Operator's Cephalon.

Players will also now have access to Simaris' Sanctuary Onslaught.

Notes

  • Note that blueprints may only be rewarded once, even if the Quest is replayed. One can buy the blueprints from Cephalon Simaris or alternatively a built Warframe from Market for Platinum to reacquire the Warframe if sold.
  • If the player began this quest prior to the Update: Specters of the Rail 0.0 (2016-07-08) update and did not craft the chassis when instructed, logging out and back in can advance the story when stuck on missing beacons required to advance the plot (such as the Scorched Beacon).
  • The appearance of the Arcane Machine in the final stage of the mission suggests a connection to the Sentients.

Bugs

  • As of Hotfix 21.3.2 (2017-08-04), the required Arid Elite Lancers do not always spawn in the indicated mission.
  • As of Hotfix 19.5.3 (2016-12-23), players have reported the questline to be "Universally bugged." The bugs include not being able to craft some beacons, which would prevent the questline from progressing. It is also advised to not attempt the quest due to these bugs.
  • Missions may not register as finished after completion, preventing players from moving on to the next mission. Logging out and logging back in can fix this issue.
  • During the final missions, enemies may not cross over the portal to the Derelict area. Go back and forth between the portal if no enemies spawn near the defense area.
  • After having completed the paying with synthesis part of the mission, the following parts of the quest may be skipped and no blueprints are rewarded. The quest is then refreshed and has to be done again.
  • Sometimes neither the target nor Simaris will appear at the beginning of a mission. (Switching matchmaking options i.e. setting it to solo or others; may fix the problem of targets and Simaris not appearing)
  • After returning from the Orokin Derelict via the portal, the alarm is on and the door is locked in Grineer Settlement. There is no available panel to hack in order to open the door (on both sides of the portal).
  • During the synthesis portion of the quest, the first two scans can be done regardless of the actual mission progress, however, to complete the 3rd scan the mission must be completed first.

Trivia

  • The transmission from the Arcane Machine heavily resembles the translation of a line from the start of the Popol Vuh, a text recounting the mythology and history of the K'iche' Maya. The translated line in question reads 'All is silent and calm. Hushed and empty is the womb of the sky.'

The Second Dream is a Main Quest added in Update 18.0 (2015-12-03), serving as a continuation of Stolen Dreams and Natah. It is the first Cinematic Quest, and yields significant lore on both the Sentients and the Stalker, along with the origin of the Tenno.


Synopsis

The Sentient Hunhow awakens from his slumber, seeking revenge on the Tenno for their actions during The Old War. Allying with the Stalker, they seek to destroy the "womb in the sky", later revealed as the Tenno's weakness: a Reservoir on Lua that was hidden within the Void by the Lotus to protect the Tenno from the Sentients.

The player is tasked with finding Hunhow, who infiltrated the Lotus' mind during the events of Natah. With the unexpected help of Alad V, all traces lead to a Sentient relic on Uranus, dug up by the Grineer. Interacting with the relic, the Lotus tries to ascertain the location of Hunhow, only to be foiled by allowing Hunhow to know the location of the Reservoir. With the Stalker en route, the player chases after him to prevent him from reaching the Reservoir first. The player follows the Stalker through a Void Gate into an Orokin Tower in the Void, realizing that this Reservoir is on Earth's moon that was hidden within the Void. Disabling the Orokin Tower's Void mask mechanism allows the moon's location, known as Lua, to be detectable. This allows Ordis to pick up the player from the tower and drop them onto Lua, where Stalker begins to collapse the void. The player is forced to phase Lua back out of the void in order to avoid it being crushed by the weight of the Void. Now that Lua is no longer protected from the Sentients by the Void, the only option left is to protect the Reservoir.

The truth behind the Reservoir is that in it lies the Tenno's true form, the Operator. In the Reservoir, the Operator directs their Void energy to control the Warframes remotely, a process called Transference. The Stalker rendezvous with the player but upon seeing the Operator, he hesitates to kill, leaving the player to deal with hordes of Sentient fighters with their newfound power: the ability to channel Void energy to fight in their Operator form.

Upon the Orbiter, the player has to put their Operator into a new Transference vessel: the Somatic Link at the back of the ship. In the final clash between the player and the Stalker, the player proves victorious and subsequently encounters the Lotus in-person for first time. As the Lotus carries the unconscious Operator into the Somatic Link, the player regains some of their memories of being a Tenno, remembering one of the five great schools that they once belonged to in the Orokin Age (the Old War).

Cinematic: The Meeting

A cinematic for the quest can be found on The Second Dream's Codex Entry before undertaking any missions.

The cinematic begins with the Stalker walking up to a platform, surrounded by floating Sentient fighters on all sides. As he walks up to the center of the platform, a disembodied voice speaks to him about the Stalker's vengeance and the Tenno's seeming immortality. As the Stalker drops the severed head of a LokiIcon272 Loki unto the platform, the voice reveals that the Tenno "essence" has been hidden from them by the Lotus, and tells him that he knows that it is found in a "womb in the sky". Using its powers, the voice gives Stalker new armor and a large greatsword with which to accomplish its mission. The Stalker asks for the voice's identity, to which it replies as Hunhow, Sentient destroyer of worlds.

Infiltrate the Grineer Archives: Umbriel, Uranus

An Archwing is required to undertake this mission.

The Lotus contacts the Tenno to warn them about the threat of the Sentient Hunhow, who has been infiltrating her mind. She also warns them about Hunhow using the Stalker to hunt down the Reservoir, the Tenno's weakness that the Lotus has kept hidden.

The Tenno are sent to Uranus on a Spy mission to infiltrate data from the Grineer on their knowledge of Hunhow, who they released after excavating him. All three data vaults must be successfully hacked in order to complete the mission, otherwise the mission will fail.

The first Data Vault hacked reveals that the Grineer had been excavating pieces of Hunhow, and that Hunhow is capable of controlling each part of him with his mind, making Lotus wonder if said mechanism is how the Sentient has been invading her mind. Infiltrating the second vault reveals it to have already been accessed and corrupted, thus Lotus entreats the Tenno to find another vault to acquire more data. Hunhow contacts Lotus at this point, telling her of his intent to restore the Lotus. While Lotus defiantly claims that he'll never find the Tenno, Hunhow tells her that he already knows due to his infiltration of her mind.

The final vault gives Lotus the final piece of data she needs, revealing it to be a personal message to her. Lotus excuses herself, telling the Tenno that she needs to contact the person who sent the message, before telling them to head to extraction.

Find the Sentient Fragment: Cressida, Uranus

An Archwing is required to undertake this mission.

The Lotus, fearing that Hunhow can listen in on her, tells the Tenno that the message she received was an offer for help. However Lotus does not reveal who said person is, only that she doesn't trust them. She then sends the Tenno to Cressida, Uranus to find a fragment of a Sentient.

Once the Tenno arrives at the mission site, the mysterious helper is revealed to be none other than Alad V, who claims knowledge of what they are looking for. Despite their antagonistic past, he asks the Tenno to trust him due to the greater threat of the Sentients. The full antagonistic storyline between the Tenno and Alad V takes place before The Second Dream in past events now inaccessible by players, and can be read below:


Upon diving underwater and reaching the site of an Orokin shipwreck, Alad V, unwilling to completely guide the Tenno in finding the fragment, urges them to search the excavation site for it themselves, providing hints only if the players are near the objective. (If the player takes approx 5 minutes, Alad V will say "I give up! Here it is! Can't you find anything not marked on your map??" accompanied by placing a way-point to the objective) The actual objective at this point is to find a tunnel closed off by rocks, which can be destroyed to reveal a passageway leading out of the excavation site and into a large underwater cavern with a Sentient wreck. The fragment is found upon exiting the waters above the cavern, a Sentient relic that the Lotus says she could use to view the memories of her father.

Once the Tenno interacts with the relic, Lotus sees a vision of the Stalker who is apparently confused, before realizing that she has been caught in a trap: interacting with the relic has allowed Hunhow to ascertain the location of the Reservoir, with the Stalker now en route to it. Alad V then tells the Tenno to hurry back to extraction. The mission ends once the player reaches extraction.

Follow the Stalker: Neso, Neptune

Back on the player's landing craft, Alad V asks the Lotus what "the Reservoir" is and whether it's a Tenno weakness. Lotus only tells him that he has already earned his favor from them, only for Alad V to counter that the Tenno are his investment, thus he wishes to see this through.

The next mission takes the Tenno to a Corpus Outpost on Neso, Neptune. The fragment apparently lead Hunhow to a path leading to the Reservoir which passes through said outpost, and that in order to reach it Hunhow needs the Stalker.

Reaching the objective marker reveals an Orokin portal room, what Alad V calls a "Void Gate". On entering the room, the Stalker vanishes as the void portal collapses. A Sentient Conculyst or Battalyst will suddenly appear, a powerful enemy unit which the Tenno must defeat. Doing so will reveal the location of a Void Key the Stalker used in the portal room to Lotus' surprise. The Void Key must be inserted into the Torsion Beam Device at the center of the portal room to reopen the void portal, at which point the Lotus urges the Tenno to enter, stating that the Sentients will be unable to follow the Tenno there due to the Void being poison to them.

Upon arriving at the other side of the portal, Alad V tells the Tenno to find a nav console to figure out where they are. The nav console is located in a room with a window looking out at a sight that shocks Alad V: The Moon. Alad V explains that the Moon was thought to have been destroyed, expressing wonder at it being in the Void all this time and at the Lotus' ability to have put it there. The Lotus tells the Tenno that the Reservoir is the source of their power, and must be protected. Once the nav console is activated, the Lotus detects the Stalker leaving on a ship headed to the moon and urges the Tenno to find a way to follow him.

Alad V realizes that the Orokin Tower the Tenno are currently in is used to hide the Moon's location in the Void, thus suggesting that the tower should be disabled to allow Ordis to pick them up. To disable the tower, the Tenno must find a marked console hidden inside a retractable cover within a generator room and hack it, which will allow 4 more retractable panels in the generator room itself to become visible. These 4 panels will reveal a blue vial each that must be destroyed, but are protected by electric arcs. One panel will be unprotected at all time, so the Tenno has to look for the next unprotected panel after destroying each vial.

Once all 4 panels have been revealed and their vials destroyed, Ordis will contact the player to tell them to prepare for pickup.

Protect the Moon: Plato, Lua

Ordis mentions that he recalls having been to the Moon once, and that he is concerned for the Tenno. The Lotus explains that the Reservoir is the source of the Tenno's power, and that its secret drove the Stalker mad. The Lotus asks the Tenno for forgiveness, telling them that they must now protect the Moon by keeping it within the Void.

Arriving on the Moon, the Tenno are tasked with stopping Stalker from reaching the Moon's Void Control Room, whose aim is to initiate a void collapse that will destroy the Moon, which will destroy the Reservoir and in turn the Tenno along with it. Before players can reach the Void Control Room however, the Stalker initiates the collapse, which causes shadow versions of hostile Infested to appear throughout the complex. The Lotus decides to pull the Moon out of the Void and back into normal space to prevent its destruction, tasking the Tenno to reorient the Moon by reactivating the Void Control Room's void compasses.

Upon reaching the Void Control Room, players must first hack a console at the center of the room, and then reactivate three void compasses located in three towers in the room by getting close enough to the devices to drain the Warframe's shields. The void compasses can only be reactivated one at a time, and only after one of them has been activated can the next one be worked on. Hacking the central console will make the Shadow Stalker appear, the improved version of Stalker with new weapons and abilities. Just like a normal assassination by Stalker, if the Tenno is able to lower the Stalker's health far enough, he'll disappear, though this will be much harder than before due to Shadow Stalker featuring similar resilience as the Sentients. When the compasses are reactivated, Hunhow threatens Alad V for being Orokin, causing Alad V to bid farewell to the Tenno as he has apparently been found by Hunhow, while reminding Lotus of their deal.

With all compasses reactivated, Lotus tells the Tenno to get to the Pendula, which are devices that maintain the Moon's stability in the Void, and deactivate them. There are four such Pendula located in four pillars in the center of the room they are located in, protected by a floating and teleporting Security Eye that will shoot waves of slow-moving destructive energy at players. As both the Pendula and the Security Eye are immune to any form of attacks, in order to destroy the Pendula the Tenno must trick the Security Eye into attacking the pillars by making the Security Eye shoot into the Pendula's direction. Care must be taken after the first Pendula is destroyed, as the Security Eye will begin to perform wide scale area-of-effect attacks after its standard beam attack. Note that these AoE attacks cannot destroy the Pendula and become more frequent with every Pendula destroyed.

After all the Pendula are destroyed, the Lotus orders the Tenno to get to extraction as soon as possible. Along the way, disembodied voices belonging to a man named Ballas and a woman named Margulis conversing to each other can be heard, arguing about the fate of "devils".

With the Moon now back in the orbit of Earth, a lone Conculyst can be encountered before the Tenno reaches extraction, though it is not necessary to fight it to complete the mission.

Save the Reservoir: Grimaldi, Lua

This mission cannot be performed with a group, and must be done solo.

The Lotus informs the Tenno that they will have to act fast, as the Moon is now exposed and the Stalker is already en route to destroy the Reservoir. Once again, the Tenno arrives on the Moon. As the Tenno proceeds through the level, more disembodied voices similar to the previous mission will be heard, revealing more of Margulis and her work, along with the Orokin's reactions to it.

At the end of the level is the Reservoir, a place with water falling into a small pond below. A cinematic then plays, where the Tenno is walking towards the Reservoir as it observes a golden flower-shaped pod emerging from the waters. The pod opens up, revealing a person wearing a black bodysuit, which the pod then carries out on a chair. The person is dumped in front of the Tenno, resulting in the screen flickering and breaking up, with the Warframe suddenly falling limp, before the view blacks out. The voice of Margulis was heard:

Dream... not of what you are, but of what you want to be.

At this message, the person in the bodysuit crawls over to the Warframe, and then touches it. The act reactivates the Warframe, and makes it carry the person in its arms. The Stalker appears afterwards seemingly ready to kill them, but hesitates, earning the ire of Hunhow who proclaims that Stalker's hate is weak, before sending the Stalker away to allow Sentient fighters to finish the job. The Lotus then orders the Tenno back to their ship, referring to them as the Operator.

At this point, the player must now carry the person to the extraction point while being followed by Sentient battle drones. The Warframe's mobility is greatly reduced while carrying them, walking much slower and being unable to use any parkour moves, including sprinting or jumping. Although they have no access to their weapons or offensive Warframe abilities, the Warframes can still use defensive abilities like IronSkin130xWhite Iron Skin, and the person can fire an energy beam powerful enough to destroy the Sentients to hold off any enemies while the Tenno moves to extraction. During this stage it is impossible to actually die, as the player's health can never drop below 1. Defeating the Sentient drones is not necessary to extract, but it is recommended because the requirement for the Sedna Junction requires killing 5 Sentient enemies on Lua, who are very hard to kill outside of this mission.

Back aboard the player's ship, the Warframe still carries the person in its arms, and the Lotus tells them to head deep inside the Orbiter section to find the Somatic Link, located inside a room at the very bottom rear of the Orbiter. Unbeknownst to them, the Stalker has infiltrated the spacecraft and is ordered by Hunhow to kill the Tenno before they reach the Somatic Link, which is the device at the very rear of the room. The Stalker will then proceed to attack the Tenno, firing red energy waves that can push back the players a significant distance away. The player must dodge the Stalker's attacks and/or destroy them with their energy beam attack to reach the Link. Once the player reaches the Link, they must use the energy beam to feed energy into the Link via a blue energy sphere at the top of the Link. When the Link has received enough energy, an energy blast from the Somatic Link will push the Tenno back, forcing the Tenno to repeat the process of going past the Stalker and refilling the Somatic Link. This must be done three times.

Once the Somatic Link has been filled three times, the person and the Warframe are both blown back from the energy dispersion, separating them. The Stalker stands before the Warframe, lifeless again after being separated from the Operator's touch. The person cowers in fear, as Hunhow monologues how the Warframe (up to this point thought to be the Tenno) is a "metal puppet" to the real Tenno, who is actually the helpless person from the Reservoir. After stabbing the Warframe with his greatsword War War, the Stalker approaches the Tenno and proceeds to choke them. Inexplicably, the Warframe revitalizes and breaks War in half, dispelling Hunhow's control, causing the Stalker to be overcome with immense pain. The Stalker flees, releasing a blinding flash that knocks the real Tenno unconscious.

Aftermath

The Lotus then appears, personally carrying the Operator into the Somatic Link. A customization screen will then appear, revealing the Operator's true face, which players can edit to their desire.

After the player's customization is complete, the Lotus reveals the Operator is the Tenno themselves, their true form. The Lotus begins asking questions to see how much the Tenno remembers, and helps him or her recover some of their memories. She explains how one of the Orokin, Margulis, helped save them from their uncontrollable powers by creating a dream-state for them to live in. The Lotus further explains that Margulis was killed by the Orokin Executors and her ideas were used by them to create "Transference", which allows the Tenno to control their powers through a remote "surrogate", the Warframe.

The Lotus continues to explain some of the Tenno's history and the five great schools they founded, all based on different principles of combat. The player is then given a choice between one of the 5 schools – FocusLensMadurai b Madurai, FocusLensVazarin b Vazarin, FocusLensNaramon b Naramon, FocusLensUnairu b Unairu, and FocusLensZenurik b Zenurik. The choices leading up to the five great schools have no actual gameplay effect but instead reorders the choices of the Tenno School, with the school most suited to the Operator appearing on the left and choice to the right being the least suited.

After confirming their school, the Lotus tells the Tenno that this will be their primary Focus, completing the quest and rewarding the player with a Focus Lens of the chosen school; this can be slotted onto a Warframe or weapon to generate Focus for that school and unlock new abilities within. The remaining schools need to be opened by utilizing their respective Focus Lenses from various activities. Only two Focus school abilities are unlockable at this point; the remaining become accessible after progressing further into quests, namely The War Within and Saya's Vigil, to access The Quills syndicate in Cetus.

The player can now activate Transcendence (default 5 ) to project their Operator, who will hover and fire a powerful beam for 10 seconds before returning control to the Warframe and entering a 180 second cooldown. Activating Transcendence will also activate any relevant Focus ability that requires the Operator's presence.

Ordis will send the player an inbox message expressing his relief that the Operator is alive and well, as well as delivering the remaining piece of the War greatsword that was broken off from the weapon, and a Scar sigil. Meanwhile, the Shadow Stalker, still hellbent on executing the Tenno for their crimes, will continue to hunt the player down in his upgraded Sentient form.

Lua is now available as a mission planet as both Grineer and Corpus attempt to occupy it.

Completion of The Second Dream is a prerequisite to starting the Rising Tide quest.

Alad V's Aftermath

After helping the Tenno during the events of The Second Dream, Shadow Stalker's followers, the Acolytes, hunt Alad V in vengeance. Alad V requests the Tenno to protect him as part of their deal for helping them unveil Hunhow's tomb. To triangulate the Acolytes' locations, the Tenno acquire security data from Grineer and Corpus systems through a series of Spy and Mobile Defense missions. The hunter becomes the hunted as the Tenno pursue Acolytes across the Origin System. In the final confrontation with the Acolyte Misery, the Tenno successfully fend off the assassin. Alad V is safe, for now.

Tips

  • In the final battle against Stalker in the Orbiter, the Tenno's beam attack can be used to directly destroy Stalker's energy wave attack, preventing it from hitting the player.
    • Firing the beam in bursts is more effective than firing it continuously, as the beam is powerful enough to destroy both Stalker and his attack with only a second of shooting, and it allows the player to conserve energy to fire more shots to intercept Stalker's attacks.
    • Be reminded that it is not necessary to defeat the Stalker as the primary objective is to fill the Somatic Link.
  • Stalker will have a different Codex entry and will also be stronger after completing the quest. If the player is attempting to fill the codex, it would be recommended to complete the entry before starting the final "Save the Reservoir" mission.
    • After completing The Second Dream, Stalker will permanently remain in his Sentient-upgraded form. Prior to completion of the quest, Stalker will remain un-upgraded when performing an Assassination on the player.
    • It may still be possible to complete this entry by scanning Stalker while he attacks other players who have not completed the quest.

Trivia

  • The Second Dream was first hinted at by Ordis following Update 14.0 (2014-07-18), when he occasionally says "Do not split the dream" as part of his recurring lines.
    • After this quest was released, Ordis no longer quotes said recurring lines.
    • It was later directly mentioned by the Lotus during the Natah Quest in reference to how she protected the Tenno, saying she "hid them away in the second dream".
  • While the replies that the player chooses during the Operator's conversation with the Lotus has no gameplay effect, the choice of replies are used to reorder the choices of Tenno Schools once the selection screen appears, with the school most suited to the Operator appearing on the extreme left, and choice to the extreme right being the least suited, ex. choosing the conversation options "I remember studying" and "We sought knowledge" will put Naramon to the leftmost side as the most desirable choice. Players are still able to choose which school they desire however.
  • Certain elements of the Second Dream appear in previous lore entries in the game:
    • The transport ship Zariman and the story of its children were first mentioned in Ember PrimeIcon272 Ember Prime's Codex entry, and again in the entry for Rhino PrimeIcon272 Rhino Prime.
    • The male Orokin called Ballas whose voice could be heard during the quest is Executor Ballas, one of the members of the Orokin Congress of Executors, who was first mentioned in the Crewman Synthesis entry.
  • According to Keith Power, one of the soundtrack exclusive to this quest had its choir voiced by Jen McMillan.
  • When running InarosIcon272 Inaros or NidusIcon272 Nidus, the void compasses will drain health instead of shields.
  • The results screen upon completing the final mission of the quest will say that it's an Assassination mission, despite killing Shadow Stalker is not necessary.

Bugs

  • The Stalker's taunt can trigger during this quest as though Stalker is going to appear. As this is a story quest however, the Stalker himself will not appear.
  • If "Public" is selected, you may find yourself part of a team. One of the team members will get the mission result, but the rest will need to do the mission again in "Solo" mode. Mission success might be awarded to the highest score, but is not confirmed.
  • If you leave the Void Gate room without defeating the sentient, it may cross to the other side, preventing you from completing the quest.
  • If you do the quest without going though the nodes on Neptune the game will allow you to do the quest anyways and if you complete it the node will unlock even without its previous nodes completed

Apostasy Prologue is a short main Quest released in Update 22.8 (2017-12-21), not found in the Codex until it is begun. This quest relives Margulis' final moments with Ballas and the latter's meeting with the Lotus.

Synopsis

A faint purple orb at the end of the Orbiter's Personal Quarters beckons the attention of the Tenno. Upon interacting with it, the Tenno is transitioned to somewhere on Lua where they begin following a purple trail that retraces the path to the room where the player recovered their Tenno body from the Reservoir. As they travel through, they experience the final moments of Margulis before her execution leading up to the discovery of Lotus' enclave at the end of the trail. There, Orokin Executor Ballas appears to apologize to the Lotus and promises to not abandon "Margulis" again. Holding hands, both Ballas and the Lotus disappear into a mysterious light, leaving the Tenno in their Operator form clutching at the remains of Lotus' helmet. The Lotus has left. The mother has abandoned her children.

In order to access this quest, the player must have first completed the Chains of Harrow quest, as well as have access to their Orbiter's Personal Quarters.

The Orbiter: Personal Quarters

In the Personal Quarters, a holographic, violet Lua orb can be seen floating at the end of the room near the port window. Approaching the orb and touching it will transition the Tenno into the loading screen. The player does not need to be in Operator mode, but the player cannot be in a squad as they touch the object.

Lua: The Reservoir

After loading in, the player will find themselves on Lua to find yet another orb. This time, approaching the orb will reveal a purple trail that will lead the player through the map. While following the trail the player will hear past dialogue between Margulis and Ballas, from before Margulis' execution.

At the end of the trail is a broken Reservoir. The trail will lead down a pit where the player will jump down and be forced to enter Operator mode.

The Void: The Jade Light

There, the player will hear echoes of the last few moments leading up to Margulis' execution and find a pod at the end of the hall, where a cutscene will play.

As the pod opens the Lotus is revealed inside, with wires connecting to the back of her head. The Lotus extends a greeting, and before the Operator can reply, Ballas himself replies to it. He then steps forward and apologizes to the Lotus for being gone for so long. The Lotus tries to explain that she is not Margulis, but Ballas insists and waves out his hand. A wave of energy flows out (which also slightly distorts the player's screen similar to the Somatic disruption during The Second Dream) and the Lotus is detached from the pod.

She then removes her mask as Ballas promises not to abandon "Margulis" again, and takes his hand. Both Ballas and the Lotus walk into a blinding light away from the Operator. Attempting to follow Ballas, the Operator is knocked back by an energy shockwave instead.

After the Lotus and Ballas disappear the Operator clutches the Lotus' dropped helmet, looking distraught at now being alone.

Epilogue

Back at the Orbiter, Ordis states that he will search for the Lotus' current whereabouts and in the meantime attempt to synthesize the Lotus' mission directives.

All transmissions that were normally handled by the Lotus will now appear as a purple Lotus-shaped hologram, to signify Ordis attempting to act in the Lotus' place. The transmission's audio and visuals will also glitch out occasionally, covered by static for a split-second before returning to normal. The small plinth inside the Personal Quarters will also display the Lotus' headgear.

Notes

  • Enabling Creator Mode in Settings will revert the new Lotus transmissions back to the original style.

Trivia

  • Apostasy refers to the abandonment of a belief or religion.
  • The "Jade Light" referred to during Margulis' sentencing echoes the previous reference to the execution of an Archimedean, much like Margulis, as expressed in the Detron Crewman's Synthesis imprint. That Archimedean, however, was apparently involved in the creation of Crewmen, and died before the creation of the Sentients, so could not have been Margulis herself.

  • The motion of which Ballas waves his hand to disengage Lotus mirrors that of the handwave used by an Orokin Executor named Avantus to access a (presumably Orokin) console as expressed in the Arid Eviscerator's Synthesis imprint.

We paced in silence until one of the Grineer, that big one, ran to a tool case on the wall and tried to force it open.

Avantus noticed this and waved her hands over the nearby console to unlock the case.

Bugs

  • The glowing orb in the Personal Quarters may not appear immediately upon completing the Chains of Harrow quest. Logging out of the game and then logging back in or simply leaving and re-entering the Orbiter after completing the quest can solve this issue.
  • When set as the active quest the game incorrectly lists this Quest as taking place on Neptune, when in actuality it takes place on Lua. Because of this you cannot start it from the Navigation Menu, you must use either the glowing orb or go to Lua and select it manually.
  • The final audio when walking through the hallway leading to Lotus may not play.
  • During Kuva Siphon missions, the Lotus' quote that goes, "The resonance frequency has changed, you're onto something Tenno" displays the Lotus' original portrait, and does not have distorted voiceover.
  • After completing the quest, the next Transmission cued will be the Lotus telling you that there is a new Quest available (The Sacrifice) in her new simulated form, before Ordis gets a chance to explain it which can cause confusion at first.

Chimera Prologue is a short main Quest released in Update 23.10 (2018-10-12), and is the first act of the Prelude to War. This short quest explores the fate of Ballas after the events of The Sacrifice, foreshadowing Natah's plan to create Amalgams.

Synopsis

The Man in The Wall manifests itself in the Orbiter's Personal Quarters, luring the Tenno towards the Lotus' helmet, dropped during the events of Apostasy Prologue. When the Tenno touches the helmet, they are transported to Lua, where they begin to follow The Man in The Wall. The Man in The Wall leads the Tenno through the Reservoir, and into the Chamber of the Lotus. A portal at the end of the room transports the Tenno into a Sentient chamber that seems to imprison Ballas, now malformed with Sentient growth. Cursing the Lotus for allegedly deceiving him, Ballas discreetly constructs the "Sentient Slayer" away from what he claims to be Lotus' watchful eye. The Tenno grasps the image of the legendary Paracesis Paracesis , learning its blueprint in the process. — The New War is coming.

This quest can be accessed directly from the Codex as a chapter of The New War quests, after completing The Sacrifice.

The Orbiter: Personal Quarters

In the Orbiter's Personal Quarters, The Man in The Wall sits on the plinth that carries the Lotus' headgear, donning it with a sinister laughter before vanishing and returning the helmet. Approaching the headgear and touching it will transport the Tenno to Lua.

Lua: The Reservoir

After loading in, the player will be dropped onto Lua. They must follow The Man in The Wall, who continues to wear the Lotus' headgear. Three times during the chase, The Man in The Wall will trap the Tenno inside of a barrier, forcing them to fight shadow-like reflections of the Lotus.

The Tenno are lead through the Reservoir and into the Chamber of the Lotus, where they encountered the Lotus and Ballas during Apostasy Prologue. At the end of the chamber is a portal that the Tenno must enter.

The Sentient Chamber

The portal takes the Tenno to a chamber of Sentient design. In this sequence, the player will no longer have control over their character, instead using the fire button (LMB ) to Void Sling to certain spots indicated by a glowing light.

At the end of the chamber, the Tenno spots Ballas, now Sentient-turned, lamenting the loss of his narcissistically beautiful Orokin body and curses the Lotus for her deception. Ballas' eye suddenly glows, which he implies to be the Lotus' vision. The player must stay out of Ballas' sight by using numerous Void Dash points around the room. If he catches a glimpse of the player, a bar at the top center of the screen will decrease. If the bar empties, he will spot the player and the mission will fail.

As Ballas rambles, several metal fragments fall in place in the middle of the room. Upon realizing the presence of the "devil", the pieces come together to form a sword and Ballas instructs the player to take the "Sentient Slayer" for their upcoming war, before looking away. As the Tenno dashes and grips the sword, Ballas abruptly turns to face them and the Lotus' whisper calling for the Tenno can be heard.

Epilogue

The Operator finds themselves back on the Orbiter as if everything they had experienced was nothing but a vision. They find themselves armed with the blueprint for the Paracesis Paracesis.

Completing this quest is also a prerequisite to combating the Ropalolyst on its Assassination node: The Ropalolyst, Jupiter. An Orbiter Decoration for the Paracesis Sheath can also be bought from Cephalon Simaris for ReputationLarge 50,000 after completing this quest.

As you may already know, in Warframe Revised we added The New War Chapters section of the Codex that allows you to shortcut to the Chimera Prologue and the Erra Quest (Sacrifice Quest completion required).

For those who have not logged in since before Warframe Revised, you will be presented with a welcome screen that now includes a direct shortcut to The New War Chapters to get you up to speed before you play Operation Scarlet Spear.

We’ve made a few changes to The New War Chapters section of the Codex:

  • Selecting a completed New War Chapter will show the End of Quest screen.
  • Selecting a New War Chapter in progress will show the Quest details like in the Codex.
