Introduction:
Lavos. The transmuter. Called by some, anachronistically, the alchemist.

Transmutation, you say? A superstitious process from long ago, in which deranged old men heated stinking substances over fires of dung, thinking they could make gold?

No. To the Orokin, it was a darkly potent, forbidden science. They were not squeamish nor moral, so what profound taboos must this art have violated?

No transmuter was more dreaded than Javi. The Crawling Serpent. The Abhorred. The Filth-Speaker.

The Orokin feared him so greatly that they whispered he might, somehow, survive even the Jade Light, just as a severed snake was once believed to grow a new head. So instead he was imprisoned, that his evil might be contained, if not quenched.

His jailer was a brute of a Warframe named Lavos.

Lavos' Serpents:

The prison of Dabaoth-Kra no longer stands: both it and the slumped Venusian mountain peak upon which it stood were long ago obliterated. We have only records to tell us what went on there.

Javi was a scrawny, hairless man, scaly with skin disease. In reluctant recognition of his Archimedian status, he was permitted to wear the white robe - now a befouled, ragged garment. Two tattooed serpents crawled up each bony arm from elbow to wrist.

Lavos, we are told, was attentive to his prisoner. He administered the prescribed soup, water, and beatings with the same punctual fidelity.

These are recreations of Lavos's own snakes - no mere tattoos, but living bio-ferrous exoflesh.

Vitam Syandana:

Observers at the prison reported that Javi was frequently whispering to Lavos. There was some concern among the wardens, but they dismissed the whispers as mere posturing.

Javi's cell walls began to fill up with scrawlings, using blood and filth as ink. At first, these were simple symbols, but as time passed, they became more elaborate. It was as if the Archimedian was turning his cell into a demonic temple, baiting his captors. There was even an image of Lavos, resplendent in his Syandana of office - perhaps an attempt at a curse.

Lavos was ordered to beat him harder, and duly did so. With the blood on the wall, Javi drew a snake. An appeal, no doubt, to his depraved idol.

Floor-washer Bekran Zaft, the sole survivor of Dabaoth-Kra, would later tell of how Lavos would stride from cell to cell - weighty shotgun in hand - clubbing and beating as required. The nightmares still haunted her.

Lavos Cordatus Helmet:

The wardens' records reveal an increasing unease with Javi's bizarre behavior.

Regardless of the potential risk, they determined that he should be executed - after a fashion. They would use cellular reversal. Javi would be reduced to a mere biological pulp with no more sentience than bread mold.

But the executioner? No jailer wanted to be the Pobber to bell that Kavat. So Lavos received this ceremonial helm, along with the power to reconfigure organic matter. He could be their instrument.

The walls, floor, and ceiling of the cell were, by now, overwritten with text. Lavos watched over Javi continually.

Bekran Zaft tells us that curiously, Lavos no longer beat the prisoners in the other cells. Even when the inmates shoved one of their hated fellows into his path, expecting a bloody beatdown, Lavos merely waited for him to get back to his feet before moving on.

Transmutation Probe:

What actually was this forbidden practice of transmutation that terrified the Orokin so? At its pinnacle, it was nothing less than the purposeful elevation of consciousness.

To the Orokin, prisoners of their endless golden dream, the thought that a person could rise above their station was anathema. Transmutation could turn commoners into kings or riches into garbage. Worst of all, it could teach people not to be afraid.

I have seen a preserved image of Javi's cell. His scrawlings were not demonic sigils and barbarous texts but star charts. Evolutionary trees. Genome structures.

Javi was not defying Lavos with these cryptic daubings in his own blood. He was enlightening him. Not dark sorcery at all, but radiant science. And the snake? A symbol not of corruption but of healing.

Javi was a teacher. He might have taught millions. Now he had only one student.

But that student was attentive.

Cedo Cedo Shotgun:

Bekran Zaft says this of Execution Day.

The jailers gathered in the auditorium. With a slow funereal tread, Lavos escorted Javi to the execution dais. He gently raised a hood over Javi's head, cobra-like. He turned, then, to face the Orokin Warden, shotgun trembling in his mighty hands.

The silence, Zaft says, was absolute.

But then from beneath the hood came a whisper. Javi had some final words for his student.

The Orokin jailer shifted uncomfortably, looked to his functionaries. Would the execution even take place?

Lavos gave a stiff bow to Javi... and activated his power.

Javi's skin peeled off in one grisly sloughing. He liquefied into a biological soup.

A cheer went up from the assembled jailers.

Lavos gathered the remains of Javi tenderly in his hands. A soft glow emanated from them. As, in one horrible moment, Javi's Orokin oppressors realized what they beheld. And then: panic. Lavos was transmuting the remains.

A twining, living snake seethed up Lavos's left arm. Javi, transformed, and still - after a fashion - alive, just as they had feared. A second snake coiled around his right arm, this one sprouting from Lavos's own flesh.

Then Lavos leapt into the midst of the assembly, hurling vials left and right, bathing the hapless screaming jailers and functionaries - and their Warden - in icy vitriol. Not one survived - not for long, anyway.

And Bekran Zaft? Lavos bowed to her and moved on.

LavosIcon272 Lavos:

They say that Lavos often takes counsel from his serpents. One is his brutal advisor, the other his wise teacher. Both have their wisdom, and Javi still whispers to his beloved student.

Much like the snake, Lavos is easy to misjudge. The serpents that poison can also cure. He may have been a monster in his previous life, but he was able to achieve something that eluded the most powerful of the Orokin. He changed.

Moreover, he changed himself. Javi may have helped and instructed, but the will to change must have begun with Lavos.

Perhaps we all have that golden gleam coiled within us somewhere, ready to slither forth from its old skin. We must only beware that we do not condemn as devilish that which we do not yet understand.
TransmuterOperatorHood

Transmuter Operator Hood-The Transmuter Javi was honored with this ceremonial hood on the day of his execution, in recognition of his Archimedean status.

Lavos served as a warden to the prison of Dabaoth-Kra on Venus, and was assigned to one special prisoner, an Archimedean named Javi, who possessed skills and knowledge in alchemy and transmutation. The IconOrokinOn Orokin feared and hated transmutation, as they believed it would allow the lower caste to rise up against them. They even feared that Javi would somehow survive being vaporized by the Jade Light, and instead chose to imprison, hoping that his presumed evil would be contained.

During his imprisonment, Javi was reported to whisper to Lavos during his beatings, and would draw seemingly demonic symbols and snakes on the walls of his cell. Overtime, Javi's behavior became more bizzare, causing his sentence to be overturned.Instead, Javi to be executed by cellular reversal, a process that would reduce him to biological pulp. After Lavos received the ceremonial garb to carry out the execution, he no longer beat the other prisoners. Due to Javi's teachings, Lavos realized that his writings were not of demonic origin but of evolution and healing.

When Execution Day came, Lavos dressed his prisoner accordingly, fitting a ceremonial hood on his head is honor of his Archimedean status. As Lavos turned to face the Orokin Warden, his Cedo Cedo shotgun trembling in his hands, Javi whispered. In response, Lavos lowered his weapon and bowed before activating his power, liquidizing Javi's flesh and turning him into a soupy pulp. The other jailers cheered before realizing in horror that Lavos was not executing the alchemist, but transmuting the remains; Javi would be reborn as a serpent on Lavos's left arm, while a second serpent emerged from Lavos's own flesh as a symbol of change. The new student of alchemy proceeded to massacre the Orokin jailers with a VialRush130xWhite Vial Rush.

Not one survived the fall of Dabaoth-Kra save for a floor-washer named Bekran Zaft, who lived to tell the tale.

Notes

  • When Lavos wields his signature Cedo Cedo, a Mod TT 20px Shotgun Ammo Mutation effect is applied.
  • At max rank, Lavos has the third highest base armor of all Warframes, behind Valkyr PrimeIcon272 Valkyr Prime and QorvexIcon272 Qorvex. Even with Lavos at minimum rank, only ValkyrIcon272 Valkyr and max rank KullervoIcon272 Kullervo have higher armor.
  • Lavos, along with HildrynIcon272 Hildryn, boasts the lowest base energy of all Warframes, having none at all.
    • However to utilize his passive ability (by collecting energy orbs), he still technically possess a hidden energy pool of 175, which automatically drains itself in 5 seconds. The energy pool is only visible when modding inside the Simulacrum.
    • Likewise his rank-up bonuses instead feature armor rather than an energy pool increase.
  • Lavos is the first Warframe to modify Mod bonuses for himself, in his case Ability Duration affects his status effect durations while Ability Efficiency affects the cooldown reduction of TransmutationProbe130xWhite Transmutation Probe.
  • Lavos is the second Warframe (after NidusIcon272 Nidus) to gain additional armor with high rank.

Tips

  • Lavos's lack of energy makes him an ideal Warframe to use in missions where energy regeneration would be severely hampered, such as in Nightmare Mode missions with the Energy Drain modifier, or Energy Reduction Modifiers in Sorties.
    • In Rathuum and The Index where Tenno start with no energy, Lavos can immediately utilize his abilities.
  • Lavos's lack of energy for abilities means that he does not suffer from energy loss caused by energy drain attacks and abilities, such as from Parasitic Eximus units and Sensor Bars.
  • Because Lavos has almost no channeled or duration-based abilities (e.g. buffs or passives) or lingering ability effects apart from Valence Block and the trail left by VialRush130xWhite Vial Rush, he has little need to avoid Nullifier bubbles for fear of losing ability effects. For the same reason, he is a prime candidate for Mod TT 20px Transient Fortitude.
  • Thanks to TransmutationProbe130xWhite Transmutation Probe's ability to transmute all ammo pickups into universal ammo pickups, it should theoretically be impossible for Lavos to run out of ammo so long as he has ammo to transmute. As well as giving him strong support capabilities to any team, this also makes Lavos an ideal Warframe for extended Archgun usage, as not only do universal ammo pickups feed into an Archgun's ammo pool, they also reduce Archgun Deployer cooldowns as well.

Trivia

  • On his introduction, Lavos could be obtained from the Operation: Orphix Venom event, purchasable from Father for PhasicCells Phasic Cells. Each component blueprint cost 1,000 Phasic Cells, while the main blueprint cost 1,500, totaling to 4,500. Alternatively, all parts had a chance to drop from Orphix Venom missions.
  • Lavos is the 45th unique Warframe to be released.
  • Lavos was conceptualized by Digital Extremes concept artist Nikita Leshakov, alluded to have sketched the first concept art during his lunch break.
  • Lavos was first revealed during Tennocon 2020's Art of Warframe Panel alongside SevagothIcon272 Sevagoth (codenamed Wraithe). His name was announced in Home Devstream 7, and his abilities were finally revealed in Home Devstream 10.
  • Lavos was featured in a fashion-frame showcase video made by [DE]Megan for reaching the final donation goal in the Quest to Conquer Cancer campaign.[1]
  • Lavos' visual design incorporates serpents wrapped around his arms and alchemical vials containing volatile mixtures that fuel his Warframe abilities.
    • Lavos' serpents are likely references to the Caduceus and Ouroboros. During idle animations, the serpents will perch their heads up from Lavos' arms, as well as slither and move around on his body.
    • Lavos' vials on his shoulders are separate attachments called Lavos Shoulder Guards that are customizable in his Appearance options.
    • His vials initially contained a silver liquid solution that resembles quicksilver[2], later adopting the Warframe's energy colours.
    • While in motion, his vials will have 'jiggle physics' and the liquid inside flows around. Liquid swishing sounds can be heard when Lavos is moving.
  • Lavos' default helmet displays signs of acid burns on one side of the hat, as a memento of his previous experiments gone awry. This change was added during development to prevent the helmet from blocking the player's aiming camera.
    • This causes Lavos' design to be asymmetrical.
  • According to [DE]Pablo, the name Lavos took inspiration from Antoine Lavoisier, a French chemist.
  • "Lavos" is probably related to the Latin verb lavo, lavare "to wash", and may be a reference to the alchemical process of ablutio (washing or purification).
    • While not confirmed, Lavos' name may also be a reference to Davos, one incarnation of the Steel Serpent from Marvel Comics, fitting in with Lavos' snake theming.
  • Lavos is the second Warframe that does not use energy for any abilities, after HildrynIcon272 Hildryn.

Valence Block

Purifying himself from all ailments, LavosIcon272 Lavos cleanses all active negative Status Effects and gains status immunity for 10 seconds upon collecting an Energy or Universal Orb. Picking up an Energy or Universal Orb has a cooldown of 5 seconds.

  • Buff duration is renewed to full upon collecting a new orb.
  • Valence Block buff icon and timer are shown beside Lavos' shield and health indicators.
  • While activated, three serpent-like energy particle effects encircle Lavos' body.
  • If Lavos is injured with missing health, Universal Orbs are collectible to heal him with no cooldown period in between.
  • When Lavos' Companion is equipped with Mod TT 20px Synth Fiber, all nearby Health and Universal Orbs will be collected, bypassing Lavos' innate orb pickup cooldown entirely.

Special Casting

Stats and Modding[]

LavosIcon272 Lavos has no energy capacity and his abilities do not use any resource to activate. Instead, each of his abilities are free to cast with a cooldown in between uses. The EnergyOrb Ability Efficiency stat will instead affect the cooldown reduction effect from TransmutationProbe130xWhite Transmutation Probe and Mod TT 20px Swift Bite.

  • Mods which convert energy spent on abilities to shields, such as Mod TT 20px Brief Respite or the Augur Mod Set, do not replenish shields.
  • Because Lavos can still pick up energy orbs, mods or arcanes that benefit from picking up energy, such as Mod TT 20px Equilibrium, Mod TT 20px Energy Conversion, and ArcaneEnergize Arcane Energize, still function.
  • Subsumed abilities injected into Lavos via the Helminth system will cost 0 energy, but instead incur a 10 second cooldown after cast and disable the elemental imbuement hold-function (see below) associated with the ability button.
    • On non-recastable abilities (e.g. Roar130xWhite Roar), the cooldown begins after the ability's duration expires, unless modded with an augment that allows it to be recastable (e.g. Mod TT 20px Piercing Roar).
    • On channeled abilities (e.g. Gloom130xWhite Gloom), they instead have a AbilityDurationBuff12 second base duration.

The AbilityDurationBuff Ability Duration stat will also affect the Status Duration stat uniquely innate to Lavos, which extends or shortens the duration of all status effects created by Lavos using his weapons and abilities.

Elemental Imbuement[]

Experiment and unleash volatile mixtures of the deadly elements. Hold down one of the four ability buttons (default 1 ,2 ,3 ,4 ) to imbue a Primary Elemental damage type (DmgToxinSmall64 Toxin, DmgColdSmall64 Cold, DmgElectricitySmall64 Electricity, and DmgFireSmall64 Heat respectively) into the mixing vial displayed above Lavos' ability icons. Imbuement has no cost nor cooldown between uses.

  • Elemental imbuement is available by default to Lavos at Warframe Rank 0 without requiring his abilities to be fully unlocked.
  • Primary Elements are shown in the four smaller diamond-shaped icons below the mixing vial. When an ability button is held down, its diamond icon is briefly highlighted until the element is mixed in.
  • Combine with a different element to produce a Secondary Elemental damage type: DmgBlastSmall64 Blast (2 +4 ), DmgCorrosiveSmall64 Corrosive (1 +3 ), DmgGasSmall64 Gas (1 +4 ), DmgMagneticSmall64 Magnetic (2 +3 ), DmgRadiationSmall64 Radiation (3 +4 ), and DmgViralSmall64 Viral (1 +2 ).
    • Inputs can be in any order, or the hotkeys can be held down together to instantly produce a Secondary Elemental damage type.
  • The Imbued Primary or Secondary Element is shown in the vial with a colorcoded emblem and plays a unique sound effect upon mixing.
  • With an element in the mixing vial, Lavos' next ability cast drains the vial to add the Primary or Secondary Elemental damage type, onto the chosen ability dealing an extra instance of damage and status proc.
    • The same Primary Elemental damage type can be imbued onto an ability that already inflicts that damage type (e.g. OphidianBite130xWhite Ophidian Bite imbued with DmgToxinSmall64 Toxin, VialRush130xWhite Vial Rush imbued with DmgColdSmall64 Cold, etc) to double the damage and status proc.
    • Imbued Primary Elemental damage types do not merge with the ability's innate damage type.
    • Non-damaging status effects inflicted by all of Lavos' abilities (DmgColdSmall64 Cold, DmgBlastSmall64 Blast, DmgCorrosiveSmall64 Corrosive, DmgMagneticSmall64 Magnetic, DmgRadiationSmall64 Radiation, and DmgViralSmall64 Viral) will proc 3 stacks in a single application of elemental status.
    • Lavos' mixing vial is only cleared of its elemental contents upon imbuing an ability.
    • Elements can be imbued even if Lavos cannot use the ability.
  • Imbuement is only available from Lavos' original abilities, therefore a subsumed ability replacement from the Helminth system will disable the associated element on the ability button.
    • Imbuement also cannot be applied onto subsumed abilities.

Rank Bonuses

Unlike most Warframes, when Lavos ranks up he receives a special set of rank bonuses which are indicated at the top-left of the Warframe Upgrade screen:

  • +20 Health every three ranks, starting at rank 1.
  • +10 Shield every three ranks, starting at rank 2.
  • +10 Armor every three ranks, starting at rank 3.

At rank 30, this results in a total of:

  • +200 Health
  • +100 Shield
  • +100 Armor

Update 34.0 (2023-10-18)

Base vs Final Stats in Modding - Health / Energy / Shield / Armor Stat Overhaul

If you’ve spent any time invested in the deeper nuances of Modding, you may be familiar with “Warframe Math” - math that upon first glance doesn’t really make sense, but once you learn the inner workings of the game, it all comes together. While we can appreciate the value that complex systems offer to a certain subsect of players, there are other aspects of the game that should have clear and understandable outcomes. Namely: Shield, Health, Energy, and Armor Modding.

Pop quiz: what is 300 + 440%? If you answered 740, you may just be an Excalibur player.

Vitality (+440% Heath), Redirection (+440% Shields), Flow (+150% Energy), and Steel Fiber (+110% Armor) come with large modifier values that don’t seem to match their outcome in-game. This is because these Mods apply their multiplier to the base stats of the Warframe - i.e., the stats you have at Rank 0. In the Excalibur example, a Rank 30 Excalibur’s Health stat of 300 earns an additional 440 Health from max rank Vitality (+440% Heath) since it applies to his base rank Health stat of 100, resulting in 740 total health.

In this update, we have removed this obfuscation by having Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor Mods apply to the stats of Warframes at their current rank. Continuing our Excalibur example, instead of Vitality always applying to Excalibur’s base rank 100 Health, it would apply to his Health stat based on his rank - namely, the stat you can actually see in your Arsenal. If your Excalibur were Rank 30, his Health stat would be 300, which means Vitality’s multiplier would be calculated off of 300.

With previous Health and Mod values, additional adjustments are needed to make this revision work while maintaining game balance. By only changing where the multiplier applies, a Rank 30 Excalibur would receive an extra 1,320 Health from max rank Vitality, resulting in a total health stat of 1,600. This outcome is a significant buff, which is not the intention of this system change.

To remedy this, we approached this problem in two ways:

1 - We reduced the overall multiplier for Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor Mods.
Since these now affect Max Rank Warframe stats, these Mods need to scale differently to maintain the status quo. Additionally, we wanted these new values to be as clear and understandable to all players as possible! Here are a few examples of these value changes:

  • Vitality: Reduced from +440% to +100% Health
  • Redirection: Reduced from +440% to +100% Shield Capacity
  • Steel Fiber: Reduced from +110% to +100% Armor
  • Flow: Reduced from +150% to +100% Energy Max

Note: These are not all of the Mods affected by this change. We share the comprehensive list further down in this section of the update notes.

Doing some quick math, this means that a Rank 30 Excalibur (300 Health) with a reworked Vitality Mod (+100% Health, applied to the final Health stat) would receive 300 extra Health, for a total of 600. That, in contrast, is a nerf, which we also don’t want to do.

So, our next step:

2 - We adjusted Warframe Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor values to keep the end result of the revised Mods as close to the original values as possible.

With this change, Excalibur’s Rank 30 Health stat is 370. With +100% Health from a max Vitality Mod, his resulting Health stat would be 740, which matches what it was originally.

While this path to the same result may seem a little complicated, the outcome matches our intention: we want players to be able to look at their Health, Shield, and Armor Mods, and be able to understand how they affect the stats they see in their Arsenal.

In addition to everything above, we also increased the base stat values for Warframes so that these revised Mods offer similar value for lower-ranked Frames. To do so, we reduced the amount of Health/Shield/Energy that Warframes earn per rank in half, and transferred the sum of that value to their base stats.

For Armor, this is the one stat that does not increase with your Warframe’s level (with some exceptions). Armor values across the board have been slightly increased to compensate for the Mod changes.

Not to beat a dead Kaithe, but Mods will now be applying to the Max Rank stat instead of the Base Rank. You may look at these numbers and think “nerf” or “buff” depending, but the outcome is that total Modded values are the same, if not a little higher in some cases. Here are a few outliers before we get into the nitty-gritty of it:

  • Lavos all have buffs to their Armor values as a result of this change.

Warframe Stat Changes:

LAVOS
Health: Base Rank - 540 (from 200) / Max Rank - 740 (from 600)
Shields: Base Rank - 270 (from 100) / Max Rank - 370 (from 300)
Armor: Base Rank - 575 (from 450) / Max Rank - 675 (from 675)
Energy: Base Rank - 0 (from 0) / Max Rank - 0 (from 0)

While there may be significant changes to Warframe Stats and Mod values as a part of this overhaul, the end result is that your Builds should mostly stay the same. The key difference is the added clarity of what your Health / Shield / Energy / Armor Mods do in your Upgrade screens!
