Komi is an ancient Orokin board game, where two players (white sun and black moon) face-off against each other taking turns placing pieces to try and surround those of their opponent to capture them.
Komi appears as a minigame during The Sacrifice quest, where players can play against Ballas on a 5 by 5 board. It appears again in Duviri as an activity with the locals on a 9 by 9 board.
Rules[]
Tips[]
The AI opponent in Komi can be very difficult, even for those already acquainted with Komi, or the real-world counterpart it's based off of (Go). A strategy was developed that nearly guarantees a win. Start by putting your first piece on the bottom left-hand corner of the board, or, in chess terminology, A1 (any corner should work). The AI will attempt to capture your piece by putting theirs in either B1 or A2. Place the second piece in B2, and the AI should play the piece capturing move. Place your third piece in A3, the AI will respond with A1. Then, follow down a straight line starting with C2, and following with D2, E2, and so on until you reach H2. By now the AI should be mimicking your plays with C1, D1, E1, and so on. Your second to last move, after playing H2, will be I3. The AI will play I1, and your final move should be I2; this should win the match with a score of 10-1.
Trivia[]
- Komi is based on the ruleset of the real life traditional Asian game of Go. The key differences being the significantly simpler size of a 9x9 square board in contrast to the standard 19x19 of Go and the winning condition of capturing ten enemy stones instead of surrounding more territory. In Go, "komi" refers to the extra points automatically given to white at the start of the game, meant to offset black's advantage from having the first move.

Update 33.0 (2023-04-26)
- PLAY KOMI
Komi is a board game well known among the Duviri residents. Sit down as Drifter and play a nice, relaxing game of Komi with the locals by visiting nearby towns and finding a board to get the game started.
The rules are simple:
- Surround enemy stones to capture them.
- Block the enemy from surrounding your own stones.
- You cannot block or surround stones using diagonal placements.
- Immediately after a capture, you cannot place a stone in the same spot from which the stone was captured.
- Capture 10 stones to win the match.
Komi Tips:
- Place stones near other stones to shore up your position and create capture opportunities.
- Loosely connected clusters of stones offer flexibility, but they also leave you more vulnerable.
- Start at the center of the board to give yourself plenty of room to respond to your opponent.
- Focus on large captures as you approach the end of the match.
- You can strategically sacrifice stones to create capture opportunities.
- Connected stones are your strongest defense.
- Cast a wide net in the early game to limit your opponent’s maneuverability.
- Do your best to accomplish more than one strategic goal with each stone you place.
You can concede a game of Komi at any point - you can always try again!
Note: Seeing as Komi is a more relaxed activity, if there are enemies within 50 meters of you you will not be able to start the game until you’ve cleared the threat.
