“You're not supposed to be in here! You're going to ruin the surprise!”
The following article/section contains spoilers. Please complete The War Within quest before proceeding.
Beware the ravenous Golden Maw.

Golden Maws are Orokin worm-like constructs that first appeared in The War Within quest, inside the caves of a snowy mountain.

Appearance[]

Golden Maws are large, worm-like Orokin automatons with a design similar to the Synathid. They possess two horizontal, bivalved mandibles with which they grasp prey, and circular golden blades in the middle of the maw which rotate. A large protrusion atop of their backs resembles a fin. When burrowing, they only leave a trail of upturned bones and earth.

Behavior[]

The Maws are said to be feral, animalistic, and ravenous. When food is no longer available, the Maws will instead resort to cannibalism, and begin to devour each other.

The War Within[]

When on the ground, Maws will move in predetermined circular patterns around multiple large rocks which are safe zones. Once the player is on ground level with the Maws, they will immediately rush them until they get to safety.

The Operator must maneuver through the Golden Maw by sprinting and jumping onto the elevated platforms, Void Slinging through the open caves, and Void Mode to stealth past them. Once Transference is unlocked, a Maw can be stunned with Void Sling and taken control of. The player-controlled Maw can burrow and attack with its mandibles.

Duviri[]

Main article: Fishing#Maw Feeding

The Maw appears again in Duviri, which the Drifter can encounter by interacting with Transference Pads found near bodies of water. They use mysterious Void powers to gain control of the Maw for Fishing purposes.

The Maw possesses the following controls:

  • Increase speed (sprint, default Shift )
  • Chomp (weapon fire or melee, default LMB  / E )
  • Rush Chomp (jump, default Space )

History[]

The War Within[]

Numerous Golden Maws can be seen in the Mountain Pass on Earth, in a large cavern filled with countless amounts of scattered bones. The Operator attempts to avoid the Maws while traversing the cavern. After fully acquiring their lost memories, including unlocking new Void powers, the Operator is able to use Transference to control a Maw to escape from the Mountain Pass.

Lost Islands of Duviri[]

On the anniversary of Dominus Thrax's coronation, a festival was held on Lake Verula, one of Duviri's Lost Islands. During the celebration, a school of rainbow eels would adamantly follow Luscinia, even wriggling on shore as if to follow her. However, a portal to the Undercroft formed at the bottom of the lake bed. From this portal, a swarm of Golden Maw writhed out. They devoured the eels, and when none were left, they began to cannibalize each other until a few Maws were left.

Thrax ordered Lake Verula to be drained, but the Maws merely burrowed away. Now, they can be found all throughout Duviri's lakes and ponds, consuming the fish and terrorizing citizens.

Trivia[]

  • Numerous statues depicting the Maw can be found under the Mountain Pass, where the Maws are first seen.
  • In VorunaIcon272 Voruna's ability screen, when hovering over ShroudofDynarIcon Shroud of Dynar, a Corpus unit can be seen wearing a miniature Golden Maw. The unit only appears in the ability screen, and cannot be found anywhere else in game.
