This shape-altering component is fundamental to Orokin construction. Allows you to change the polarity of a mod slot on a Warframes, Companions or Weapons and then resets their affinity to Unranked. This can only be used on max Rank Warframes, Companions and Weapons.
—In-Game Description

Forma are items most commonly used as a supercharger to add, remove, or alter the Polarity of a Mod slot on equipment such as Warframes, Archwings, weapons, or Companions. This process is called Polarization and allows mod capacity to be used more efficiently.

Forma do however have additional uses. Their second most notable use is as a component in the creation of certain items, including being used in weapon blueprints, the creation of the Exilus Adapter and other supercharger equipment, and adding Tiles to a Clan Dojo. Finally, Forma may be sacrificed to rise in Syndicate ranks.

All drop rates data is obtained from DE's official drop tables. See Mission Rewards#Standard Missions for definitions on reward table rotations. Drop chances are rounded to two decimal places, following the official drop tables repository.
Expected means a player can expect to obtain at least one of a drop every N attempts on average.
Nearly Guaranteed refers to the total number of attempts a player needs to obtain a 1 in 10^2,3, and 4 probability not to have recieved a single drop (99%, 99.9%, and 99.99% probability to have received at least one drop).
The combined probability of multiple drops is 1 - ((1-A%) * (1-B%) * ...) (add drops in same rotation)

Using Forma on Equipment

To apply a Forma, go to the Arsenal and access the desired item's Mod loadout. Select Action at the bottom of the screen, then choose Polarize, which will show all available types of Forma to choose from. Choose Forma, which will show a layout of the item's mod slots and polarities. Click on a slot to cycle through the possible polarities. A slot that already has a polarity (either by default or from a prior polarization) can also be changed.

Forma can only be used on equipment that has already been ranked to 30 and, when used, said equipment is reset to rank 0 (unranked). However, Warframe, Archwing, and Necramech may retain abilities and/or their ranks depending on the player's Mastery Rank; for example, a player with a Mastery Rank of 30 or higher would have all abilities unlocked at rank 3. Forma can also be used again on already polarized equipment, provided that it is leveled to 30 again. Orokin Catalysts and Orokin Reactors are unaffected by the usage of Forma. Re-leveling equipment after using Forma on it does not grant mastery points.

For each Forma used on equipment, said equipment will gain a star above the name of the equipment starting from the center.

  • Making the most of Forma means remembering the Polarities of the mods the player wishes to use. For example, weapons almost always need damage mods, such as Mod TT 20px.png Serration; Serration has Madurai Pol.svg Madurai polarity. Therefore, it would be useful to add a Madurai Pol.svg Madurai polarity to any weapon that does not already have it. Consider reading the Polarization page for more information about this process.
  • A Forma is required to craft nearly all Clan Research weapons, though this is most likely only for gameplay reasons as most of them don't involve any Orokin technology.
  • All syndicates require Forma to advance to Rank 2, as well as in order to become neutral if the Tenno has fallen to the first negative rank.
  • A Warframe, Archwing, or weapon that has been polarized at least once can have their Secondary Energy Color customized.
  • Oddly enough, players can polarize Aura mod slots with the Unairu Pol.svg Unairu polarity, despite there currently being no Aura mods with that polarity.
    • Similarly, players can also polarize mod slots belonging to non-melee weapons with said polarity as well.
    • For more flexibility it is possible to use an Aura Forma, which grants Aura Pol.svg as a universal polarity.
  • Players cannot add Umbra Pol.png Umbra polarity to slots using mundane Forma. Existing Umbra Pol.png Umbra polarities can be replaced with others, but after that, they can only be restored by using an Umbra Forma.

  • Forma means "shape" in a variety of languages.
  • From the Scanner inside the Orbiter, one can occasionally hear a Grineer inspecting someone's cargo and getting bribed with a Forma after he finds something suspicious.
  • The prevalence of golden surfaces in Orokin Void levels and on Prime equipment may indicate the use of massive amounts of Forma in their construction. The grey surfaces in the Clan Dojo may be due to Tenno improvising with more mundane materials while copying Orokin aesthetics.
  • The shape of Forma resembles that of a puzzle piece.

Patch History

Update 31 (2021-12-15)

  • Fixed being unable to install the Forma you purchase from the Arsenal Warframe upgrade screen.

Update 30.9 (2021-11-11)

When we first introduced Forma years ago, Warframe was a much smaller game. We had fewer weapons, fewer Warframes, and way fewer Mods. As players continue their Forma journey, there’s often discussions on doing a Quality of Life (QOL) pass to the way things work with our favourite Golden Puzzle Piece.

We want your Mastery Rank to be considered when using Forma to establish a baseline power level for your playable characters!

What does that mean?

If a Mastery Rank 30 player uses a Forma, they won’t have to re-unlock any Abilities (or their Ranks) on a given item! Yes, they’ll still need to level the gear itself to apply another Forma but, depending on your Mastery Rank, you can have access to more (or all) Abilities on your unranked gear! This achieves our goal of keeping Forma essential to build customization, but allowing players with higher Mastery Ranks a more convenient experience.

Right now, using a Forma on a Warframe (or Archwing/Necramech) requires you to start from 0 when it comes to Abilities you can use. Furthermore, you only get the first Rank of your First ability. Take Valkyr for instance. You install a Forma, and you’re back to only casting unranked Rip Line!

Our change will make it so your Mastery Rank impacts how much you have unlocked by default on Forma use. Following our Valkyr example, with this change, a Mastery Rank 10 player would have all of her abilities unlocked upon applying a Forma to her, albeit not at their full strength!

This ranking process is something players already experience in game - you know by the time you’ve levelled your Valkyr on Hydron to 10, you unlock Hysteria. We are making your Mastery Rank ‘match’ those milestones, so to speak, with the end goal being a Mastery Rank 30 player can use Forma without ever having to be locked out of Abilities. Simply put, the higher your Mastery Rank, the higher the baseline of your gear when using Forma.

New additions since the Dev Workshop:

Post Dev Workshop feedback and continued conversations have added on another related change to reaching Mastery Rank 30+:

Sorties and Arbitrations now allow Mastery Rank 30+ players that have put at least 1 Forma into their Warframe to bypass the "Rank 30 Warframe" requirement.
