This is actually a step toward a larger project that a couple of us are working on, but here's what I wish to accomplish: I'd like to develop a user-friendly interface that would let people enter in data, then submit that data to a database in order to calculate an average success rate for each extracted resource per extractor type. Preferably the interface would be graphical (as opposed to editing a page), but I can't even seem to get past this first step: it would seem that the version of MediaWiki that Wikia uses has disabled almost every source of "post" or "get" function beyond those included with the software (like the "publish" button). Certain extensions that would otherwise be available (most notably the Semantic MediaWiki Bundle) are no longer supported.
Apparently this is due to some abuse--I'm gathering that it leaves sites vulnerable to cross-site attacks or otherwise overloading servers with data. However, I'm wondering if anyone out there has any ideas as to alternatives--particularly in the data submission department?
This is a big deal, as I feel that the majority of readers simply don't feel comfortable editing wiki pages. Having large amounts of data collected from a variety of players gives us a better chance at painting an accurate picture, and having a simple GUI would help that along. It might not be so important for this project...but if we were to, say, try and estimate the odds of a rare card dropping on some obscure node on Sedna, every little bit of data would count.
Even if I could get a simple button that posted a number to a page every time it was pressed, it would be helpful. At this point (relatively early into my investigation), I can't even seem to figure out a way to do that :/. I am confident that there is a way to do this without having to leave the site, but that confidence might just stem from my ignorance, ha ha.
Anyway, any input would be helpful. I'll keep plugging away in the meanwhile. Currently looking into Scribunto, but something tells me that the functionality from Lua has been reduced in that as well.
Update 1: for now, I'm going to do it via a poll. Currently investigating methods of parsing data from Extension:Polls, as well as the "verbatim" tags.
Update 2: looking into javascript functionality--this will probably do it.
